LatentE said at 6:01 p.m. on Oct 21, 2007: Not part of Richler's books, at least that I remember, but a part of my memory and one that Marcel Proust tells us is one of the most fundamental - smells and the smell of the Saint Laurent Bakery just down the street from Schwartz's. I can smell the vanilla (Calvin Klein copied the old country girl perfume) and see the mille-feuille and eclairs and whatever those little wedding cake like things with cardboard bands holding the cake topped with whip cream and a cherry are called. I remember the cop that walked me across Blvd St-Laurent almost every school day and left my hand smelling vaguely of fish. I tried to avoid him though he was only well meaning. But those smelly hands!
In the fall the leaves became so abundant that they could easily be massed into giant piles that kids (me included of course) would take running dives into. Then in the winter, this was before snow was carted away, the snow would be pushed to the sides of the streets forming mountain borders. Towards the end of winter when the mounds were higher than corn fields at harvest time we used to play king of the hill.
In spring it was time to chop away the six inches of ice with its ingrained sand and dirt that covered the sidewalks. With the warmth the snow began to melt and the games of racing toothpick boats down the rapids of water flowing to the corner drain would begin.
With the approaching summer the down pouring rain turned the streets into magical plains of a thousand little crystal crowns. This was a match for the etched glass of frosty winter windows in the days before multi-paned thermal glass. The streets would be cleaned by water trucks that sprayed the dirt to the curbs. Us kids, on seeing the truck approaching, would run out into the street and play a double jump game, jumping over the twin sprays as the truck passed. Looking back and thinking of the driver it must have been unnerving to see kids running out into the street whenever you approached.
I remember a winter years later walking by Parc St-Louis and seeing from the distance what looked like people floating through the park. The impression was almost dream like. When I got closer I could see that they were skating on the paths that crisscrossed the park. They had been iced over for skating. I'd never seen that done before nor did I see it afterwards.
Sorry, but whoever that hockey player is he doesn't seem a match for Maurice or Henri.
Old memories. Time to make new ones.
