NAUGHTY KRISHNA

Krishna used to love butter.

He was naughty but all the Gopis in Vraj(place in India where Krishna grew up) loved him.

(Gopi is a word of Sanskrit origin meaning 'cow-herd girl'. In Hinduism specifically the name gopi is used more commonly to refer to the group of cow herding girls famous for their unconditional devotion (Bhakti) to Krishna.)

It is said that Krishna would steal the butter, that the Gopis would prepare.

Why would God want to steal the butter, when all the butter in the world belongs to him?

I prefer to believe that butter is soft like the heart and so ‘Butter’ means heart, and that is what God does. Steal your heart and all the wrong things that go on in your mind.

The Gopis would keep complaining to Yashoda(Krishna's foster mother)that Krishna steals their butter and breaks their urns full of water. One day Yashoda  got very angry with Krishna and ran after him. But she could not catch him. You know why? Because while she was running after Krishna, his back was towards her. And the back stands for all the wrong things. So that means that if you are running after the wrong things in life, you will not be able to catch Krishna.

Yashoda was holding a stick in her hand. Can you catch God with  a stick in your hand? No!...Right? So Yashoda was not able to catch Krishna!

When Yashoda got tired of running, and she dropped the stick, Krishna faced her!

Yashoda was no longer holding a stick, and she was no longer looking at Krishna’s back. So she was able to catch Krishna.

Now she decided to tie Krishna. Krishna allowed himself to be tied because he knew that his mother was tying him with a rope of love.

But Krishna’s mother loved him too much, so she told him not to be naughty again, and steal her heart as otherwise she was not able to concentrate on her house work.

Yashoda untied Krishna. Krishna and his mother hugged each other because they loved each other so very much.

THE LINES ABOVE HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE WITH SOME ADDITION AND CORRECTION BY ME. I LIKED THE LINES AND DECIDED TO INCLUDE THEM WITH MY PICTURE TO GIVE A CLEARER IDEA TO THE DRAWING.

THE DRAWING WAS DONE BY ME IN HIGH SCHOOL WITH A BALL POINT PEN. IT WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY DRAWING IN PEN BY ME. I AM QUITE FOND OF THIS PICTURE MAINLY BECAUSE DRAWING WITH A PEN IS QUITE DIFFICULT(IT'S NOT POSSIBLE TO ERASE THE MISTAKES ;o) )

SOME YEARS BACK, I HAD GENEROUSLY PUT UP THIS PICTURE IN THE PUJA FOR THE FESTIVAL OF JANAMASHTAMI (LORD KRISHNA'S BIRTHDAY)  AS THERE WAS NO STATUE OR PICTURE OF HIM THERE. WHEN I CHECKED UP LATER, SOMEONE HAD DROPPED GREASE ON IT! I WAS VERY UPSET. THE SPOTS ON THE PAPER ABOVE ARE THE VERY SAME. THE PAPER TOO WAS VERY OLD AND YELLOWING, SO I DECIDED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF IT BEFORE IT DETERIORATED ANY FURTHER AND POST IT HERE. HOPE YOU ALL LIKE IT.

Oh, this drawing is a spiritual gift from God who gave you your talent and now you have shared it with everyone and we are all blessed. Back in 1969 in northern California, I used to hitch hike from Mendicino County to SF. While I was waiting for a ride I chanted Hare Krishna and another chant that goes: Gopa la, Gopa la, Hey Baa-key Na Na, Gopa la (not sure of the spelling, I just tried to write it phonetically). Your drawing and story takes me back to those nurturing Hindu chants. Thanks for sharing. You are so creative now with Tabblo and then with your drawing.

The image (yellowed and all) does have a timeless look to it. The story is new to me. I'm surprised at how God is part of a very mundane typical family situation. A naughty child and a scolding mom.
