Urban Escape

The fire scape has always intriqued me as an urban feature. Its function purely practical; its addition to a building, a potential distraction from building form. In some cases, an architectural geometry, in other an extension of place and ownership.

Bel tabblo... mi piacciono molto la prima e la terza foto, eccezionali sia nelle riprese che nel contesto. Complimenti.

You've nicely captured cases where an effort to make fire escapes something more than a simple utilitarian add on can add to the beauty and interest of a building. My impression of fire escapes (don't know if it's right) is that they are after the fact additions based on some change in building code that didn't exist at the time of construction. I can't think of newer buildings that have fire escapes. Usually the second path of exit is internal. In these pictures you can even see the water pipes added on, likely for emergency fire use. I think according to fire code the plants are illegal, potentially hindering exit. I especially like the first image with its contrast between new and old construction and the cloudy sky.

This tabblo takes a lovely look at something we often don't even notice. Nicely done. I will probably now find myself looking for fire escapes!

in spite of that fire escapes are merely functional, they attract more attention than they should do )) maybe because they are beautiful as structures. i always stare at them too )) thanks for sharing %
