There Are Always Mountains

Every fall Alison and I pack up our vehicle, strap my kayak to it's roof, and head out for a ten to fourteen day camping and fishing trip. Each year, as we get older, and roughing it is a little harder to endure, our annual holiday becomes more and more a concession on my partner's part, a gift she gives to me because she knows just what I get from spending those precious few days out in the wilderness.

There's just something about being out there in the natural world that feeds my soul and 'roughing it' seems to be an intrinsic part of the experience. ... The cold, the wet, getting warm, dry, and clean, feeling the sun and wind on my face, catching the next day's breakfast, collecting wood and building a fire, smelling the smoke from it and watching the flames dance, and then at last snuggling into a chilly sleeping bag at night with nothing but a thin layer of stretched out nylon to protect you from the elements;

... it's just all so alive and real, and nothing, nothing is taken for granted.

Unlike the rest of the year, I don't need an alarm clock to wake me and I'm up with the dawn. Someone once told me that that was when the fish were feeding, and although I've never once caught a fish before ten am, I don't ever want to miss out on the chance that I might. So it's a quick trip to the outhouse, and If I have time or it's too cold to do without, I'll light the Coleman and make a cup of coffee to take with me out on the lake.

Fishing is something I love to do that has nothing to do with anyone else, except for the sharing of the fish I've caught afterward. But when I'm doing it, it's just me, the lake, the fish, the trees, the mountains, the sky, ... and the rhythm.  It's just all so simple and beautiful, ... and quiet.  If I'm thinking, it's under the surface, or happening within that rhythm that it's not obvious to me.  I'm alone,  but I don't feel alone at all, more the opposite, like I've slipped comfortably into that slot where I'm connected to everyone and everything.

I don't know how to explain it except that something bigger than me, ... God if you will, Mother Nature, or simply the earth is cold, and I feel it. This bigger than me something makes the wind, and I respond in turn by digging in deeper with my paddle; the wind dies down, the motion of my kayak flattens, and the force of my strokes match. Catching a fish is like receiving a gift, being rewarded for my ability to match the rhythm that I'm submerged in, that I've become part of.

I'm starving when I come in off the lake, and everything I eat tastes wonderful. Breakfast is a celebration, and if it's the fish I've caught, even more so with the added bonus of feeling like I'm a provider passing on the gifts that I've been given.  The sun rises higher in the sky, burns off the fog and warms the air, and I strip off the layers I'm wearing, again, another celebration, another 'this is the life' moment.   ... And then at night when the sun sinks below the horizon, and I build a fire, the warmth from it is another gift that the earth has provided, the heat bursting from the fire wood as if it's releasing a collection of a thousand sunlit afternoons.

Alison and I play this game when we are sitting around a campfire. At any given moment we ask the other, what are you thinking about right now. It's amazing how your thoughts travel so freely without you realizing it, as you are sitting there so quietly watching the flames. Sometimes it's the day's little drama's that play out in your head, making sense out of them, sorting them out and filing them away, and at other times your thoughts are drifting like smoke, and there's nothing heavier in your head than wondering just what causes the popping that sends a spark flying into the cold air.

And now I'm home, and I am glad to be, but I felt a bit displaced for the first few days. Everything seems so different here. The rhythm is different, more complicated; the reasons for doing things seem fabricated and not so much part of something simple and whole. I can't see myself waiting again for another whole year before I get back out there again. It's where I find peace, where everything comes together for me, and where I feel part of that bigger something.

The trick, I suppose, is to hold onto that feeling for as long as I can....

This set imparts a wonderful sense of being 'away from it all'; at one with nature. What an adventure. Your pioneer spirit shines through the narrative. You give me the feeling that out on the lake you are at one with your surroundings, alone but far from lonely. Great tab, Dar, which I know will be my TOD. A vacation like this must be a cleansing, rejuvenating experience.

Simply wonderful, Dar.... definitely should be a TOD in my opinion. You don't tell us where you took all these amazing shots but I think I can see the Three Sisters in Canmore. No matter, I have enjoyed every image and also the interesting text. You are lucky to be able to express your feelings so well which, like your Mum says, makes us feel as if we were there, too. I am in Scotland right now where I was born and raised and hope to come back with some interesting photos. A fav for sure!

And that fishing trip set you 'done' good! Puppy seemed a little flaked out on picnic bench but then WARMER up there lol! Of course this "Most Excellent" Tabblo had to be TOD...You are back with a stunner...Not only do you take fantastic pics, but your prose flows beautifully which adds to the impact of the visuals...I know Allison took some of these shots, so Kudos to her too. It's obvious why you feel so centered in this gorgeous nature setting.. I love driving in the mountains and was immediately hooked with that first image...and knew that the best was yet to come as I scrolled down the tab. Like your words, every shot here counts and builds the story...TOWAAANDA..

Moorlerche said at 4:20 p.m. on Oct 22, 2009:
Definetely the Inside Passage. I know these fogs from the panhandle! Dar I hang on every word of your story. It was just like being outdoors myself. And when I came upon the photos of the campfire, I was reminded of my first true wilderness trip. Sitting before a tent in a National Park in Ontarion, two days away from civilization and then - oh glorious night - my friend and I saw our first northern lights blowing in green curtains over the midnightblue firmament.

Oh, I love this tabblo so much, you cannot imagine it. And the final picture is pure magic. Congratulations for the TOD. I had a feeling you would get, when I went half through this morning.

Grandbrother said at 5:43 p.m. on Oct 22, 2009:
Beautiful record of a truly refreshing experience. And while it may be more and more of a concession every year for your partner, the pictures lead me to believe that your little dog gets as much joy from the trip as you do. The shot on the picnic table bench with the one leg hanging down is priceless.

I know what you mean about how hard it is to wait a whole year for the next one, too. My annual trip out to Big Bear is coming up in a few weeks, and I hate to think about how quickly it'll be over. But this'll be year 18 and counting going out there, so there'll be plenty more to come.

Congratulations on a well-deserved Tabblo of the Day.

Wonderful shots to compliment your narrative, so very transcendental. Emerson and Thoreau would approve. Congrats on TOD
AliDar said at 12:31 p.m. on Oct 23, 2009:
Thank you ANKE! It's not the inside passage though; it's on a lake; Muchalet Lake on Vancouver Island, near Gold River. Just like on the ocean, the fog happens when's there's a big difference between the temperature of the air and the water. Just as soon as the sun goes down, the cold air from on top of the mountains slide in. There was fog nearly every night and morning, although we DID have a few gorgeous star lit nights. :)

DEB, (chuckling about Grady having the same toy as Fizz, but a bit more shredded) ...We should talk more then!!! :) I've noticed that you and I have shared this connection with the natural world and it's rhythms before, and that both you and I need a good dose of it to keep our souls happy. :) ... I person can go their whole life without believing in something, but I challenge them to submerge themselves in such an environment, and not come away from it believing that there is something bigger than they are. ... Thank you! :) ... Oh, and BTW, Alison wants everyone to know she's not quite the wimp I made her out to be. She said she wouldn't be there if she wasn't enjoying it as well. ... We just have to plan our trip for a litter earlier in the season from now on, is all. :)

Hey MIKE, Thank you! It was a rejuvenating experience, but the same thing happens each year; I lose at least fifty percent of that good feeling and connection when I return home. Remembering it brings quite a bit of it back though, and sharing it with you all doesn't hurt either. :) I'm glad I made this tab. :)

Thank you CP; MANUEL! :)

Hey MOM; glad you got to taste the fish! :) One of these days you and Andre are going to have to come out this way so you can experience the whole thing for real. I would love to share this with you for real! ... We'll rent a cabin for four! :) And BTW, I LOVE your new avatar! :)

NOREEN; I'm honoured that you paid my tabblo a visit, all the way from Scotland! Thank you! :) These pictures were taken at Muchalet Lake, not far from Gold River, here on the Island. I don't know where Canmore is, but now I have to check it out. If it has mountains then it all ready has one of the prerequisites for one of our holidays. ... Do you think there's a rec site and a lake near by? <Grin> ... I've always wanted to go to Scotland; lucky you! And you can bet I'll be looking forward to seeing your photos!

Thank you Jesus; ... I tried to. :)

Hey ANNELIES! Thank you! ... And you are very smart, so it's no problem for me to tell you. <G> Alison took a little over half of these, of course the ones that I'm in, a few of the landscapes, the gorgeous pink sunset is one of them, as well as my favourite shot from the trip: the early morning shoreline with the left side fading into nothing (I think I'm going to have that one framed) and pretty much all of the macros and flora shots. You're probably smart enough to figure out that the fire shots and abstract water shots are mine, and the first and last shots, which I'm rather pleased with.

Okay, since I've so many to respond to, I'm going to post my comments in bits. You've all been so very good at coming to see my tabblos and commenting, I have to behave toward each of you with the same kindness and respect. Thank you! :)
AliDar said at 1:47 p.m. on Oct 23, 2009:
Thanks ANDRE! (Chuckling) TOD doesn't mean that it's beautiful, but it is kudos from Eric (Thank you Eric! :)) and that means your tab gets to sit in the primo spot, and get lots of attention for the day. :) Your dropping in and telling me that I really did pull it off is just as good, believe me. Thank-you! :)

Magnificent is pretty high praise NEUSINHA, Thank- you! :)

WALTER, the calibur of work here at Tabblo never ceases to amaze me either; Thank- you very much for stopping in and telling me that I have lived up to the rest of it! :)

Hey PATTY, nice to see you here! :) Thank-you! ... Alison does have beautiful eyes! :) ... And you got it, it's not hard to take good photos when you are surround by such spectacular beauty! I'm from the east coast and though I find there quite beautiful and it will always remain home to me, I'm finding there's nothing that inspires or causes as much awe in me as the rugged and mountainous terrain of my adopted province, beautiful BC!

JONA, Thank-you! I'm very please my tabblo inspired such love in you! :)

I know ROBERT, but what can I say in my defense? ... I just had to show it off! :) Thank-you!

PAM; it's very important to me to have it all work together. You know you've always been a mentor of mine here at Tabblo, so you're telling me I've created a masterpiece lets me know, for sure, that I've done good. Thank-you! :)

Oh EDU; I'm sorry I haven't been around; I see that you've been very busy making a ton of beautiful tabblos and I've not had the time to go see even one! Thank you for your forgiveness, and your kudos. I promise; just as soon as I have time to I'll shower you with the attention you deserve! (((((HUGS!!!!)))))
AliDar said at 5:35 p.m. on Oct 23, 2009:
Thanks PAT! :) ... Although I'm not sure what I've left to do now that I've done the perfect tabblo. <Grin>

Thank you DAN! It IS a very wonderful place! :)

Hey LINDA; Thank you very much for the Most Excellent compliment! :) I'll make sure Alison get her kudos as well. ... I'm still planning that trip to Florida one day, or for you coming up here; you never know... And then we'll get the chance to spend some time 'centering' ourselves, together in the mountains. :) ... I'll just have to make sure it's a place where you can bathe every three days or so though... <grin> ((((((HUGS!!!!)))))

ANGELA you have it right! Even if I didn't catch any fish it still would be wonderful! Thank you! :)

CELIA, I've done exactly the same thing with other tabs. Sometimes you are so involved in what you are seeing and reading, you don't right then have any words to describe it. I am very honoured that my tabblo gave you something of that experience. :)

Delicious is good word ELIANE; Thank you! :)

Thank you MRSFABULOUS! I am pleased that you dropped in and enjoyed the photos and story! :)

IRA, I always look forward to your comments; you always have such a poetic and beautiful way of saying what you mean. Thank you! :)

Hey SANDY; Thank you!! :) One of these days you're going to have to make up some of those grits to go with the panfried trout that we catch :)

WOW ANKE, that sounds like it was a great trip. You know, I live here in Canada and I've never seen the Northern lights! It just got added to my must do list!

SOLANGE, it took me awhile but I finally found a translation for what you wrote; Thank-you! :)

SEAN, I just came back from reading your profile, so I'll be looking forward to seeing the photos you take during your trip to Big Bear And you're right; Fizz enjoys herself out there too, but only when it's warm and dry. ... One of these day I'm going to have to take her out in the kayak with me, since she seems to have an incredible interest in it. Thank you Sean! :)
AliDar said at 6:28 p.m. on Oct 23, 2009:
Hey SHIRL; thanks for popping back in with the congrats! :)

Thank you SUE!, and yes, Fizz is very cute and she knows it. Both Alison and I adore her! :)

Peace BOBBIE! ... And thank you; what lovely way to put it, "a love story'. :) ... Do you think I over did it with all those photos of me? <Grin> It wasn't mean to be self serving; Alison just takes such wonderful photographs and many of them I happen to be in. :) She doesn't like me taking her photograph so much, and besides, I forgot to pack the usb cable for her to upload the photos to the laptop, so once her cards were full, I let her use my camera. ... I was off fishing most of the time anyway, as you probably all ready gathered from all the photos Alison took of me fishing. <G> BTW, you're looking a little stoned these days with your new Avatar. ;)

Thank-you FABIO; all this talk of masterpieces is going to go to my head! <Grin>

NOE; I'm pleased my tabblo made you feel like you were there. I get the same feeling from your tabblos as well you know. :) Thank-you! :)

RHONDA, Thank you very much! Awe is pretty big word! :) ((((((HUGS!!!!!))))))

... Somehow I knew that you would get it DEN! :) Thank you!

Thank you JAMES! :) ... I just noticed, you just got TOD as well; if I've time after responding to all of these comments, I'll be sure to check it out! :)

Thank-you JOHN; ... I think it's John; my apologies if it's not. You know, when I was in my late teens and early twenties, I carried my copy of 'On Walden Pond' around with me like it was a bible, :) so your "very transcendental comment is a compliment indeed. :)
