Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Festival

Lining the path into the Ethnic Festival are flags of many of the countries that were being represented at the festival.

Samoa Hut-The food is not heavily spiced. We had coconuts; they cut the top off and gave us a straw and a spoon. They were good, but not very sweet.

Russia has long cold winters so most of the food that they eat is high in carbohydrates and protein. There were potatoes and meat dishes.

The Thai hut had a variety of foods. Most Thai food is spicey. I tried the chicken curry and it was very good over rice.

The formal dress of a girl from Laos; Laos is located in Southeast Asia. I had not heard of this country before.

Vietnamese food is made of a lot of different things. This was one of the busiest huts at the festival; I think everyone wanted to try it.

Young Girl performing a Japanses Dance on the Main Stage.

Japanese girls performing one of thier traditional dances.

The ethnic festival offered numerous educational opportunities. There were sixty different countries represented.  Each culture represented had on original garments of their country. Each booth had a variety of authentic food to eat. The environment was very busy with all of the people that were at the festival and because there were so many different counties being represented. Everyone was friendly and anxious to answer questions when I asked.

Several of the countries performed traditional dances on the main stage. We watched the Japanese dances that the women and children performed. They were all dressed beautifully and the dances and music were calming.

I would recommend that if anyone had the chance to go to an ethnic festival to take advantage of it and go and learn about others countries and their traditions. You definitely will not leave hungry!
