Catholic imagery photographed in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo

“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above

or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Exodus 20 v 4-6

I like all of them except that red guy ! ! ! !
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:49 p.m. on Aug 11, 2009:
DOREEN: THE "RED GUY" IS A "EXU", NOT NOT the devil or satan in Christian terms. Exus are powerful "orishas" (spirits) who function as divine messengers. As such, they are sort of translators between humans and the natural world. In addition, Exu possesses a dual nature as Divine Trickster and Door Opener. He can remove obstacles and open the doorway to new opportunities. It is up to you which door is open. If you decide to open a door to some unsavory place, that is your responsibility, not Exu's! They have some expertise in a particular area. Some are great doctors who know all of the secrets to healing. Exus are worshiped in the Afro-Brazilian religions. Exu is not evil, although he is usually portraited as this red guy, with horns, tail and a very scary smile...

THIERRY & KARINE: THE BLACK VIRGIN IS OUR LADY OF APARECIDA, PATRONESS OF BRAZIL.

MIKE: EXUS ARE MUCH SMARTER THAN ME - AND A LITTLE BIT MORE POWERFUL, TOO...

ROBERT: I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT AFROBRAZILIAN RELIGIONS, BUT THEIR ICONOGRAPHY AND TALES INTEREST ME A LOT.

DOREEN: SORRY FOR MY MISTAKES (WITH THEY WERE SIMPLY TYPOS...): "AN EXU", INSTEAD OF "A EXU", THERE IS A DOUBLE "NOT" THAT MAKES NO SENSE...

GAYLE: Thanks for stopping bye.

DEBBIE: Christians believe in only two "forces": the good (God, the Virgin, Jesus, Holy Spirit, the saints & angels) and the evil (devil & its fallen angels). Afrobrazilian religions, on the other hand, have lots of gods and godesses which are either good and/or evil, depending on the point of view. Like Greek gods, they have human passions, being envious, jealous, vindicative etc. An Exu (there are many of them) is not a devil, but he is portraited as one (for centuries the afrobrazilians could not profess their religions, so they used Christian saints to replace their forbidden deities - and they found no saint to emulate Exu, so they had to use the image of the devil).
