All Around Ilocos

I've known Chichi for the past three years - she was one of my junior pediatric residents during training.  I met her fiance, Bong, in January of this year when we all flew to Davao City with some other doctor friends to be at a wedding. We bonded over the next few days as we toured the neighboring towns (and islands) of Davao City

This was my first time to take prenup photos and I'm very grateful to ChiChi and Bong for asking me to tag along.  Their invitation gave me a chance to visit Ilocos again (and visit some landmarks for the first time), and it was the perfect weekend getaway following my illness :)

More importantly, it also allowed me to bond with the couple and get to know Bong some more, and learn some new tips and tricks from a professional photographer in the person of Jamie.

Thanks, you guys! I had a fabulous time :)

~ Myles

My very first shot of the couple, taken last January as they boarded the boat that would take us island hopping in Davao.

Being the only couple in a group of fourteen, and with their own wedding just couple of months away (they are getting married in September), Chichi and Bong quickly became a favorite subject for me and the rest of our companions and our cameras. We took photos of them every chance we got.

"Prenups," we said.

Reluctant models on the boat :)

They were very shy at first, but as the days went by they became more comfortable with all the cameras pointing at them, and eventually got used to being directed to strike different poses.

On the zipline at Camp Sabros.

Day 2 of the five-day trip. Getting more comfy in front of the camera(s) now.

Day 4. Camera-shy no longer ;)

As our Davao trip came to an end and we were going our separate ways, ChiChi and Bong asked me to tag along and take pictures too when they had their official prenup pictorial, and I promised I would.

Fast forward to 6 months later...

The dates were set, and the couple told me where we were going to shoot.

Ilocos Norte!

I'd been there last year and I enjoyed every minute of that trip!

I boarded a bus at 3am early Saturday and 11 hours later arrived at my destination.

We were going to shoot at five different locations in two days and we got started right away!

Malacanang of the North

Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Otherwise known as the White House of the North, this palace overlooks Paoay Lake and used to be the residence of deposed Ferdinand Marcos and his family when they were in the north. It was built in 1977 and became the venue of the trendiest high society settings. After Marcos was deposed in 1986 and died a few years later, the palace was transformed into a museum of the late president’s memorabilia.

With the official photographer, Jamie, who was a very willing teacher to me that weekend :)

Paoay Church

Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Known as the “Earthquake Baroque” church in the Philippines, Paoay church is the best known Baroque church in the Philippines and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The cornerstone of the church was laid by the Augustinian missionaries in 1704 while the cornerstone of the belfry was laid in 1793.

The church was built of baked bricks, coral rocks, salbot (tree sap) and lumber, and has 24 carved massive buttresses for support.  The church facade faces the setting sun, and the unique mix of materials used to build it gives the church a golden glow at dusk.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Burgos, Ilocos Norte

Built in 1892, the lighthouse stands on a promontory in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.  It is the highest lighthouse in the Philippines and is the most accessible of all lighthouses in the north of the Island of Luzon. It was built in 1892 and is still functioning to date, serving ships passing by the northern part of South China Sea.

The Bangui Windmills

Bangui, Ilocos Norte

The "Wind Farm" as it is aptly called consists of 15 wind turbines built by the NorthWind Power Development Corporation to take its share in reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs) causing global warming and to accelerate the rural electrification of the goverment.

The Beaches of Pagudpud

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Pagudpud is a coastal resort town on the northernmost tip of Luzon in the Philippines.  The town is widely known for its fine, white sandy beaches, said to rival the beaches of Boracay.  But while Boracay caters to the party scene with its wide range of island activities, day and night, the charm of Pagudpud lies in its being the exact opposite...

.... because of its distance from Manila (about 12 hours by bus), even on a long weekend Pagudpud does not get as many tourists as Boracay.

It certainly gives one the feeling of being away from it all :)

JAMES, salamat :) I've learned a lot from you and I do try to put everything into practice when I take photos. Hehe pwede na ba? Your brother has seen these photos on my Multiply, actually :)

LEWIS, most of the directing was done by the other photographer, Jamie, and I learned a lot watching her work. Of course it helped that these people are my friends and by day 2, I was giving some directions na rin :) I will be at their wedding as a guest, but of course, I will be wearing my camera with my formals :)

DISTINCTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY: My I call you DP for short? :) Thank you... I am enjoying your albums too!

YU-HE: We didn't actually plan the wardrobe, except for the beach shots (white and khaki is a standard for beach shots, I think)... it just so happened that when we got to each location, the clothes the couple was wearing just seemed to be perfect for that place :) Thank you for leaving a comment :)
