4th OF JULY FIREWORKS, 2009 - PLAYA DEL REY, CALIFORNIA

The wife and I walked down to the beach to see the fireworks last night. It's always fun seeing them here - since you have a clear view way up and down the coast, you can see different displays going on for miles and miles. So here are a bunch of shots from the Marina Del Rey fireworks.

Just before the fireworks started

And then they began...

I started off with a few long exposures just to see what they'd look like

But then I got really interested in how each blast lit up the smoke in the air

And just for kicks, this is mounted in the door of a house we pass on our walk to the beach. It seems really American, so I think it fits here...

Happy day after the 4th!

Thanks all. And yeah Deb, getting the shots crisp and in focus was a challenge with these. I spent a while before the fireworks started getting my settings at least in the ballpark, and then had to make lots of manual adjustments as the show went on. It was totally worth it though....I'm very excited at how a lot of these came out. Especially the ones that look like they were taken of space from the Hubble telescope or something.

Super job! I've always enjoyed seeing how the smoke streams 'light' up with the different colors.

Cool shots. Fireworks are fun to shoot. I especially like the ones that look like nebuli of stars.
Grandbrother said at 8:34 p.m. on Jul 23, 2009:
Thanks George. I'm glad you mentioned that some of them looked like a nebula or stars in particular, because I plan to use some of these shots as abstract representations of just that in a project I'm working on.
