Kinkaku-ji (also known as "The Golden Temple") was originally built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for a Shogun, whose son converted the building into a Zen temple. It was was burned down twice during the Onin War and once again in 1950 (by the monk who should take care of it...).
The present structure dates from 1955. The top two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf, and the pavillion is set in a magnificent Japanese strolling garden.
No need to say Kinkaju-ji is one of the most visited temples in Kyoto - even not being the most beautiful nor impressive building in that amazing city.
