This is the journey towards our identity. The picture above is a mosaic filled with pictures of my friends, family, classmates, students, adventure, and so many other things that I have come into contact with at least once in my life. |
|
Who am I? Go ask someone else. |
|
Who am I? Is this really the right question to ask if we want to learn our identity? I believe not.
Your identity is what defines you. It is so easy to simply ask yourself who or what you are, but often enough the answers to these questions are marred with bias, neglect, pride, selfishness, and the likes. I believe that one cannot so easily learn his own identity, without the help of his neighbors - without the help of the truth. |

We can choose the type of mark we leave behind. |

|
Some people's imprints are larger than others - we can choose our own sizes. |
|
Now, I am telling you that you do not know who you are, as I do not know who I am. It does not matter what our names are, nor does it matter what we look like. Whether I am Walter or Retlaw, it does not matter. In the end, everything will be the same because we make our own identity. Nobody else can do that for you.
What then matters?
What matters is what we leave behind. Once we are gone from this world, nobody will remember us. Our physical bodies will either be cremated or buried. Eventually, it will just decay and you will be no more than dust in this world. When that happens, your identity will be nothing, like many of those that have come before us.
In order for your identity to last in the world, you must have made a mark. The only things that will be remembered of you are either the remarkable things that you have done, or the horrible things that you bestowed upon others. |

|
There are a lot of people who need you to come into their lives and make a difference. Just have a look around. |
|
There are many types of marks you can leave in this world. The best thing that you can do is to use your all strengths and abilities in order to help out other people who are in need. The more people that you are able to help out, the better.
The more lives you change, the bigger your footprint.
You do not need to have any super powers to save lives, much less to change them. You will be surprised how much a smile or a nod of acknowledgment could do. Give out words of inspiration. Give hope to the hopeless. Simply share whatever you have to those who you think need them more than you. Share your blessings, and I assure you, you will not be forgotten so easily. Remember, small things could go a long way. |

These are a few of the lives I think I may have changed. Only they can know for sure. |

Your identity is what you leave behind. What do you want that to be? |
