John Constable a self portrait

John Constable 1776-1837 was the foremost English painter of the 19th Century. Born in Suffolk many of his paintings were of the countryside around his home.

It is wonderful to visit these places and to photograph from the spot where some of his paintings were done.

Celia,it is very interesting seeing ( or "to see" ?) the real places of a painting; luckily they have not changed ! The thatched roof are fantastic. The paysage is so beautiful, a really piece of Heaven. Ciao, dear friend.

My fav is the Hay-Wain painting and your photo 200 years later-like time travel. I've always enjoyed Constable's paintings--this tabblo is a real treat.
Chilla said at 3:19 a.m. on Jul 5, 2009:
Linda, thank you for your lovely comments. It was great fun trying to find the angles from which Constable did his paintings, but the one of the Haywain was th only one that was quite obvious. Many trees have developed in the intervening years and so the actual perspective has disappeared!

Sue, thank you, it was a place I had wanted to visit for some time and it was remarkable to be able to see those exact scenes from 200 years ago.

Your new camera was certainly a good investion. One beautyful tabblo after another. I have certainly missed a lot these past weeks, but fortunately these works are also available for late comers. It's astounding how little the scenery seems to have changed during 200 years, apart from a bit more growth. Thanks for putting up these comparisions.
Chilla said at 1:41 a.m. on Jul 17, 2009:
Thank you so much Anke. I really enjoyed this day out and found it fascinating tracing the steps of this wonderful painter, I was delighted to find that it was possible to take a picture from the exact spot that the Haywain was painted and that little had changed!
