WIND IN PLAYA DEL REY - MARCH 22, 2009

I started off last Sunday kind of annoyed that the weather was keeping us from playing volleyball.

But later in the day, Anne and I drove up the coast on our way back from running some errands, and were blown away by how

violent the wind was out there. So we got home, I grabbed my camera, and headed back out to get some pictures.

There was like a foot-thick layer of sand being blown around that really pelted your legs. Got in your eyes, too.

It made for some very cool designs in the sand though.

It was strange - the wind was blowing these trees west to east, but the clouds above were drifting east to west. Not sure how that works...

It was some of the most violent seas I had ever seen out on our beach.

Some cool, rusted screws in the top of the pier pictured above this shot.

The clouds that rolled in looked pretty threatening. No rain though, thankfully.

A couple crazy guys came out surfing on those nasty waves.

This guy was the craziest of the two.

And finally, sunset.

love the screws. they are so abstract. like people almost. The surfer shots are amazing. The wind blowing the Palm Fronds. WOW. that is strong. Love seeing Cali in your eyes. #8 really moves me. the composition is like a still life. excellent the 2 yellow posts, the two barrels and the three trees with the wind.

Sean--this Tabblo just really captures everything rough and wild--the angry waves, the two wild and crazy surfers, the dark clouds, the wind blown sand. Some of your images look like the Sahara Desert--really great perspectives. Like Mike said--glad you went home for the camera.

Hey, nice job on this Tabblo! I remember that day; it was windy here, too! I'm in Torrance. What beach is that pier at? Looks like a nice place to go shooting!
Grandbrother said at 5:47 p.m. on Mar 26, 2009:
Thanks very much Kevin. The closest beach with a name is Dockweiler, but the piers in my shots are just north of there. Actually, that stone jetty jutting out behind the surfer is part of the boat entrance into the marina at Marina del Rey. It's a nice little isolated stretch of beach that tends to only have locals on it since there aren't really any parking lots around.

And thanks to everyone else for the kind words!

love the perspectives and lights and shadows of the dunes! the crazy horizon line adds to the chaotic feel of the pounding sufr, almost like when you tossed into the water! or slammed by a big wave and knocks over! :
