A Little Magic and Some Realism

some of my favorite Books.  When I first read Isabel Allende"s "House of Spirits"  many years ago, I discovered "Magical Realism," a Genre I have come to consider one of my favorties.   While  one of the most well know authors in this Genre is Marquez,  Alice Hoffman,  an American writer, has adopted the style quite well.

(Not all books pictured are magical realism)

what a wasabi delightful tab!! love the way you introduce us to the books, the angles. rich colors, the last perspective is dope. do you use dark chocolate as a bookmark?? and I like those two words together: magical realism.

this tabblo is a beautiful tribute to your books. love every shot, angle and thoughts they provoke. Alic Hoffman is one of my fave authors. I read a great Allende called "The Infinite Plan" It's not as welll known. and a bit of a break away from her usual. If you like the "paul Bunyan" style of tale, you must be a big fan of Gabriel García Márquez!!?? I am now reading The Savage Detectives, upon Allan and a couple other friend's urging by Roberto Bolano. KILLER. like this TAb

wasabi tabblo, Linda!
love your books!
Wildthing said at 4:33 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
I believe that there is only a very fine line between fact and most fiction. The great writers can blend the two seamlessly to produce what you deem to be Magical Realism. Love the layout and angles of your books, Linda.
Lifequest22 said at 4:45 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
Dar, have I ever steered you wrong. [ intrusions]. Thanks, Den--I think you would enjoy reading some of them. Mike--actually, Magical Realism is a very specific genre.

"magical realism, is an artistic genre in which magical elements or illogical scenarios appear in an otherwise realistic or even "normal" setting. It has been widely used in relation to literature, art, and film." (wikipedia}

Here's a good link. : http://www.english.emory.edu/Bahri/MagicalRealism.html

Pam--one of these days I will get to "The Infinite Plan." Wrote it down when you told me about it.
Eduardo.affonso said at 5:58 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
"Life in the time of cholera" is one of the best works by García Márquez, almost as good as "One hundred years of solitude", which is his masterpiece. I like the way you photographed your books, specially the last pic. I will try to do something similar (inspired by you, obviously!).
Andre. said at 6:14 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
I'd call the last image "Magical Realism". Very mysterious (2 me)
Chilla said at 6:25 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
Beautifully constructed tabblo and an interesting selection of books
Lifequest22 said at 6:29 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
Thank you Eduardo, Andre and Ceila. Andre--the book in that last image is a wonderful read and deserved a good photo. I'm afraid however, that my poor African violets are not fairing well--I've neglected them recently. Celia--the books are worth a read.
Leftofcenter said at 6:36 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
what's that they told you
about a book and a cover?
don't judge so quickly
they'll tell you one thing then another
but see what lies within
under the skin..

Thanks, Beth. Eduardo--I had placed the Maquez book I the table to shoot it, and have decided I like how it looks there and will leave it. Leftie--I love that video--talk about surreal.

Abking said at 9:22 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
Great presentation of books I haven't read except for superb Mr. Marquez. His book looks so right between the African violets with the light streaming in, I half expect the pages to open.

Lifequest22 said at 11:34 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
wow--thanks everyone. It's great to see so many of you interested in books, but I guess that's not surprising from so many creative people, is it Fabio. Tundre--yes--I think books tend to be very much a personal choice . KISS. ... Deb--If you get a chance--read Alice Hoffman's "Turtle Moon" which is set on the east coast of Florida.

Karsten--I just love Like Water for Chocolate. I saw the movie too, but the book is much better. I haven't read that Marion Zimmer Bradley yet, but it's waiting patiently for me to pick it up. And if you make that recipe in rose petals, you'll have to make a Tabblo so we can see your masterpiece.

Allan--I too love how the Marquez book looks in its new home rather than on the book shelf.
Lifequest22 said at 11:36 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:
Zip--I added this to Father G and I thought we could talk about books, like artisss do, even if they know nothing about them .
Zippywinds said at 11:55 p.m. on Mar 12, 2009:

Reading books at your house looks like a sensual experience, soft light, dark chocolate, potpourri. I'll be right over and watch you read.
Lifequest22 said at 11:24 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Thanks. Karsten--yes- Gloshtlight is a newer book. I read some of her books years ago too. Pam--Water like chocolate was a hoot. The tears in the food. Sue--glad to hear someone is familiar with Daughter of Fortune. POP-- all photos here are staged. What you would see if you were here is a big white dog getting hair all over the place while the cockatiel is chirping loudly. I've only created an allusion.
PhotoPop said at 11:37 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Well congratulations you shattered my illusions. Oh damn, I got dog hair in my mouth and stop that screaming vulture from squawking, it's deafening. I think I'll go to the library instead.
EMA said at 11:44 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Beautiful tabblo! Some of your favorite books are also mine. I love Isabel Allende's books. The House of Spirits was the first I read and loved but also The daughter of Fortune, Paula, Ines of my Soul... and others. Like Water for Chocolate is also a very nice book. So many others I've read and loved like Chocolate, Five Quarters of the Orange and Holly Fouls from Joanne Harris a fantastic writer. It's impossible to talk about all the books we have read. So many along our lives!...
Lifequest22 said at 11:45 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Well Jean-Emile--I'm actually sitting on my patio with my lap top and coffee right now. The Florida weather is just gorgeous--about 74 degrees..
PhotoPop said at 11:57 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Woman, you are heartless. It is 29 degrees here and we are happy because it is sunny. Tomorrow the entire neighborhood will be dancing in the streets because it will be in the forties.
Lifequest22 said at 12:00 p.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Thank you Edite--I think we both have good taste in literature. I haven't heard of Joanne Harris but will check her out. Yes--I have been reading for many years and couldn't begin to even remember all the books. And I find that my choices are different now than when I was much youger.
Lifequest22 said at 12:50 p.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
Maybe it's time to move to Florida, Jean.

Edite--I do know who Harris is. I haven't read any of her books yet, but have seen and absolutely loved the Movie Chocolat. I do want to get her books.

a verfy lovely and great presantation of this special books, Linda. I especially like the first. The cover is looking a bit like a paint from Gaugin and the title shocks a bit and the book is draped in the middle of little nice green flowers. A very wonderful composed " painting " all together !!!
