Inside Kellie's Castle

Kellie's Castle was built by William Kellie Smith, a Scottish planter, as love gift for his wife, Agnes. William was born in Dallas, North Eastern Scotland to farmer parents on 1st March, 1870. At the age of 20, he travelled to Malaya to seek his fortune. He made his fortune from tin and in 1896 he built Kellas house and he returned to Scotland to marry his sweet heart Agnes. He brought Agnes to Malaya, they were blessed with a daughter and a son. The rage at the time was  for the wealthy  to own a castle hence he built Kellie's castle. Unfortunately he died of  pneumonia in 1926 in Lisbon when he went there to collect his elevator lift. It would have been the first elevator lift in Malaya. Distraught Agnes went back to England leaving the uncompleted castle.

"The castle that never was", as Mike said. Husbands who build castles for their beloved wives are not that usual nowadays.

Wonderful story and pictures. There is a similar story in the Thousand Islands which straddle the border between the US and Canada. See: http://www.boldtcastle.com/
