Fortynine Palms Oasis

Fortynine Palms Oasis is one of the five oases found @ Joshua Tree National Park.

There are actually over 50 palm trees at the oasis.

As you approach the oasis the sharp contrast between the rocky desert surroundings and the green lush oasis make it difficult to miss.

The blackened trunks on some of the palm trees show their fire resistance.

The trail (out and back) is just a little over three miles.

A cool 360 degree VR Panorama of the oasis can be found here.

More information is available at the National Park service website.

That does look amazing, in the middle of a very barren landscape to see so much green. I wonder about the blacken tree trunks. With nothing much else around where do fires come from? I'd guess they are set. Maybe they act as lightning rods. Very hardy plants.

LatentE: The fires seem to be the result of both lightning strikes and ignorant yahoos. You'd think that if you walked out there to appreciate such beauty you'd leave it as you found it so that others (or perhaps yourself) could enjoy it again. I recently went caving in Kentucky and the amount of graffiti in some of the caves left me perplexed.

We used to camp in Joshua Tree Nat'l Forest. With very small children we didn't do much hiking...just enjoyed a respite from the big city. :-) Thank you for this.
