Top Layer: Delete background from tree using EXTRACT and manual erasing. Duplicate tree multiple times and arrange pleasingly.

Layer Two: Use GRADIENT to create a colorful pattern that you find pleasing. Change gradient layer style to EXCLUSION

Layer Three: Type something interesting. Apply Drop Shadow and Bevel Emboss

Layer Four: Use RENDER to create a layer of clouds. Change layer style to Difference

Tweak endlessly until you're happy with the overall effect and upload.

For my B&W1; version, I used the Carr method and tweaked the curves a little.

Then I added some grain on another layer to add some texture, and I brought the opacity down so that the grain wasn't overpowering.

The original image is a bit too small and too compressed to make lots of adjustments. But this conversion method can give some nice results, in general.

1. Selected a portion of the tree and background with the magic wand tool.

2. Applied ink outlines brushstroke filter.

3. Changed mode of entire photo to grayscale, then changed again to RGB.

4. Selected a green color that I liked from my swatches and applied color to needles and moss at base of tree with the color replacement tool.

5. Repeated procedure for brown in trunk and red in potting container.

6. Edited in the quick mask mode using the eraser I erased around the tree until satisfied that I had selected all I wanted.

7. Switched out of quick mask mode, and “grew” my selection by choosing ‘grow’ from the ‘select’ menu.

8. Inverted my selection in order to select the background and chose the deep blue photo filter at about 75%.

Ok, I want those bonus points! Here is what I did to the picture of the Bonzai tree. As I already mentioned, I'm not a Photoshop or PSP wizard so I used both programs to get this result (because I didn't know how to do it all in one program ..) . At first I opened the picture in Paint Shop Pro 9 and did an automatic improvement which made the colours somewhat brighter. Then I added some "tubes" of mountains, flowers and the Buddah. I also added sunbeams. And then I used an effect that accentuates the edges of the illustrations. I saved the picture and re-opened it in Photoshop where I used a Mehdi plug-in (see Cruiser's tabblo "An Abstract Tree: Mehdi Plugin examples...") called "Absolute Color". And the result was "Bonzai and Buddah".

Same here Jason, Mine is not showing very well either. Love the Projects and a new one each week is a good idea.
Zippywinds said at 10:40 a.m. on Nov 19, 2006:
all are absolutely fabulous, i'm having fun, ditto for me on the weekly project plan :)
DVP said at 2:38 p.m. on Nov 19, 2006:
For what ever reason, all the photos load as a narrow size. The Tabblo must be edited OFTEN in order to show each person's work. I've checked the challenge at least 3 times each day to make sure that happens. Please be patient if your work isn't showing correctly, I will ensure that it is appropriately displayed as soon as I can edit the Tabblo.
DEE-Trow said at 2:59 p.m. on Nov 19, 2006:
Wow, these are amazing. This Event has really taken off!
Zippywinds said at 3:01 p.m. on Nov 19, 2006:
DVP you are doing a great job, especially being the 1st project, even when the picture uploads to a narrow size and all one needs to do is click on the pic and wowzy you get the whole deal, most of the web sites that deal in photos and alike you need to click on the pic to see it better and see the pic solo, and a BIG thanks again for the awesome job you are doing :)
Anjad said at 12:28 p.m. on Nov 20, 2006:
Zippywinds said it all! You're doing a great job!
DVP said at 12:36 p.m. on Nov 20, 2006:
Thanks to Everyone for participating and your kind comments, this one's not over yet. :) And today somebody is spamming the Tabblo. Amazing!
Scharn said at 6:22 p.m. on Nov 20, 2006:
I did something wrong...my photo showed or part of it without comments. I used Image Maker as I don't have photoshop.
step one auto adjusted color
step two used the difuse filter with an orange background
step three used a filter called "jaggy"

This was a great idea with many great results.
Vinca said at 10:48 p.m. on May 25, 2007:
Wonderful idea. I am a zero at photoshop etc. Have tried it a little long back. But it was quite complex & wasn't too interested then. In fact i don't even have the programme. But i want to learn. Tried reading and understanding here. But then, unless i actually work in it, it's of no use. Thanks for making these programmes fun. :o)
