22 Aug 2004 Regugio Sunset

Refugio Pass is in the Santa Ynez mountains in the southwest corner of California, and the site of Ronald Reagan's ranch. It's easy to see why he loved it there.

Sunsets can be spectacular. This day was one example.

Just to the east is the 4015-foot peaks of Santa Ynez mountain, and Broadcast Peak, where TV and FM stations serve Santa Barbara, the Santa Ynez Valley and the Central Coast.

The sun is to the back of the camera here. Note how the sunset extends all the way eastward.

As the sun went down, I took a series of shots that attempted to make subjects out of areas in the detailed clouds in the sky.

With this camera, a Nikon Coolpix 5700, this isn't easy, because it tends to overexpose to white where the light is brightest. That accounts for the white areas in some of the clouds.

Close to my heart. Great camping down there at Refugio State Beach Park. Bikers will love the twisty Refugio canyon road. They better bring a camera as you can see....

Fantastic colors. I like the one with the sihlouettes in the foreground.
