En Passant - Taken in passing .. by a smile

And remember the fleeting smile.

Please forgive my silly narrative.

One of my "on again, off again" themes is sidewalk bridges - those covered walks to protect pedestrians from falling construction debris. Usually I stop at night when the overhead lights dominate and the depth perspective is emphasized by the brightly lit structures. The other day I stopped at this particular one just a bit north of the WTC site. It seemed to have possibilities but it was only after I put this image on the computer screen that my eye was caught by the transient smile - a smile that was gone with a few more steps.

Sixth Avenue opposite Bryant Park at 42nd St.

A fruit store on Broadway on the "upper West Side."

Basketball courts under the highway along the Hudson River.

.. to the subway yard in Brooklyn.

Tight quarters on the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

From Far Rockaway in Queens ..

.. to the streets under the tracks in Harlem ..

.. the steel is there.

Above, below, or beside.

Even the ads get caged.

Sometimes you feel the bars even when they're not there.

Till you can break free above the steel.

See the sky.

Dance in the streets.

Wow wow wow. This is going on my favorites list. The bridge shots are my favorites; the grocery store evokes memories of my first visit -- only last November -- to New York.

Amazing! The perspective, the life (single moments captured by you), the idea for this tabblo. and the narrative! Already a favorite! Congrats!

Quel plaisir de découvrir des ambiances de vie des USA avec des yeux talentueux comme les vôtres ! C'est un festival de belles photos dans lesquelles passent aussi des instants de vie, du mouvement. Beaucoup de talent. Merci.

B R A V O!! I always open your tabblos with eager anticipation. this is a sweet story, and your captions are perfect. I am wondering, on photo #3 is that's an old studebaker? my eye went right to it! anyway, thanks for the great essay. Love it. The last shot has a 3D like, surrealesque, quality to it.

Great job!
LatentE said at 3:08 p.m. on Jan 14, 2008:
Thierry et Manuel (Magedimages), merci beaucoup. C'est très gentil de votre part.

Please forgive my "Google" French. I wish I could say French was something that I was familiar with, though I am half Québécois. All really, though half Francophone, if that makes any sense for a non-French speaker. The odd circumstances of my upbringing made French .. foreign to me. Anyway, "En Passant" came to mind from the odd chess move, of a pawn capture "in passing" rather than the usual "take" of a piece.

Thanks Bob, Saul, SeánanForbes, Steve, Marranei, and Pam. It's always nice to get such positive feedback.

Saul, in that shot of the two cyclists passing each other on the Brooklyn Bridge the rider facing the camera was upset and yelled at the other cyclist since he wasn't given any room. You can see that the inconsiderate rider was even leaning towards the other cyclist. As you can see from the "KEEP" sign, bikes are supposed to stay on the right side (north side) of the bridge.

Pam, I checked the full sized image and the car in the fruit store image is a late model SUV like pickup truck, though I vaguely remember a Studebaker with a similar look to the headlights. Also a '58 or so Thunderbird. I don't know about 3D in the street dancing shot. The lens was set wide so people drop in size quickly with distance. Actually I find the "Bistro" shot to have a 2D effect, as if there was a very narrow plane in which people and objects could move. The Bistro and street dancing shots are of the same place or within a block or two of each other on the same street, though different days.

Again, thanks everyone.

My wife says I seem to be drawn to 'passageways'. I did a whole tabblo on passageways last spring. These are great shots with unique perspectives and interesting compositions. Like someone else said, I always look forward to your tabblos and also to your comments because I so much respect your photography.

Almost every set of your photos makes me want to move to NYC…God, where is my luggage…
Leftofcenter said at 6:25 p.m. on Jan 14, 2008:
Well Pam beat me to it, of course your narrative isn't silly, actually it goes hand in hand with your AMAZING photos, your vision, your angles. I love images out of city life especially big cities like New York. The "caged ads", the light of the sun setting on the basketball courts and of course the FLEETING SMILE...
ps half-québécois?? francophone/anglophone that's classic jargon straight out of Québec! :)
Saulblum said at 8:44 p.m. on Jan 14, 2008:
Yep, I know all about the bikers-vs-pedestrians "battles" on the Brooklyn Bridge, having walked over the bridge countless times, when tourists will just nonchalantly walk onto the bike path, so it's amusing in a sense to see a biker get annoyed at a fellow biker for a change!
Lifequest22 said at 10:17 p.m. on Jan 14, 2008:
I just love your NYC tabs. I miss the city and your incredible photos always make me nostalgic. They really bring out the vibrance of the city. And loved your commentary!!!!!!!

Wow, this series really is fantastic, narrative and all. Along with other commentators, the first one is my favourite - it is so unique, a one-of-a-kind, never to be repeated and so well described. There are many superb shots here - I am in awe!

that`s so great, like ghosts walking- wonderful captures !!!
Memotions said at 6:06 a.m. on Jan 15, 2008:
Great photos put together in a fascinating order. Gives one the feeling of being improsoned and then being set free to dance in the streets! Your blurred shots really emphasize the urgency and sense of purpose of daily life in a big city. Thanks for the journey.

Thanks Pat (Candlepower), Paul, Anna (Decoy), Marian (Nina1960), Bill, Andre, Leftie, Saul (again), Linda (Lifequest22), Debra (Debdog), Noreen (Hollyridger), Angela (Shenresi), Patty (Memotions), Sue (Snooway) and Charlespop.

Saul, I've done my share of yelling at people to get out to the way.

Leftie (I keep forgetting the convention on "y" as opposed to "ie"), maybe I'm a Munchkin. Tim Horton was still remembered as a "Katie, bar the door" Maple Leaf defenseman back then.

Thanks again everyone. I had a nice pic (the top one) that I thought was appealing and so I wanted to post it. But that meant I had to throw something together into a tabblo. The result was the very loose thriller story of oppression and escape.

I'm still looking for an outlet for this one, which didn't quite fit "dancing in the streets."

That (brilliant)"in limbo" photo could shine on its own two feet or should I say "pointe" ;) call it prima donna! Tim Horton is a hockey player???? gotta google!

Love your work in this tabblo. The first shot has a spooky feel to it and your caption is perfect for the Bistro. I can almost hear the music playing in the last shot. Enjoyed your photos...it's a fav.
Pkeener said at 2:47 p.m. on Jan 15, 2008:
Latent, I just love that shot. It is so surreal. LIke a scene from a Felini or a David Lynch. Why dont you just make a one photo tab?

I love the varieties of life in the city you've captured in this collection. The individual photos are wonderful, but I always have extra admiration for a combination of photos that add up to something more than the sum of the parts. It makes a tabblo truly a tableau. Keep up the fine work!
