Bronx Science Math Team, 1980

I was on the Math Team at the Bronx High School of Science, class of 1980.

I don't remember why, but a photographer from Life magazine came and took photos of us.  They were never used in the magazine.

I'm the fuzzy kid with the long hair.  The other two in these pictures are David Chiang and Benji Fisher.

The math team was a great experience, because we were left to our own devices a good deal, to work out problems, investigate our own interests, and in general flex our intellectual muscles.

Ned,

Wow. That was a balst from the past. I was not on the math team, but we were in Shweidel's 20th Century History class together, however.

The clothes in these pictures are really great. Kids today try to copy the look, but these pictures show that they are missing something!

Good luck with your new site, it is unique.

Batchelder,

Great stories about excellent times. There really is nothing like an image to generate a tsunami of emotions.
Send more photos of science times, you and the rest of the team, then and now, and your company. mazel tov. mary theodore, class of 1980, 2.

ps any photos from the math camp in new hampshire and the 17, yellow pig conjecture?

Ned, you guys are better-looking than I remembered. Good memories, though it reminds me I was only a math team wanna-be in high school. Now, I get to run quant investment strategies professionally, kind of like adult math team.
Peace,
John Chisholm

Ned - Thanks for letting me know about this. It looks like a great program -- you're putting your techno-genius to use! I just love seeing those photos. Regards, Beth Lieberman

Good photos! Very nostalgic -- you all looking so young and sweet... Where are the other guys now, do you know? And, who was the photographer who did such a good job? Mom.

Those cetainly bring back the good old days - We've forwarded it to our friend who was a photo editor at Life at the time. Perhaps she can shed some light on how it happened or why it didn't get used. That looks like a Me And Bessie t-shirt - thats another oldie but goodie. Dad&Anne

Hi Ned...I was one of the group you met at the Boston Photography Center a couple of weeks ago. Great photos! I graduated in 1975, so these were after I left, but these captured the feel of the place.

I was 9 years old and in Michigan in 1980. Nevertheless, these photos are great... definitely makes me remember those days just before Lennon and Reagan were shot, and the Space Shuttle became a household word.

Hey Ned!

We were'nt friends at the time, mere aquaintances I think, but the photos brought it all back. I remember you! I wouldn't have without them. I've been in touch with a fellow alumnus who has a picture of me in front of the school shortly after someone had scralled 'welcome to the machine' across the front doors. I'd lose an eye to see that one! Tabblo is a great idea, I'll be watching closely!

Ned: I found this page by accident - what a surprise. I actually do remember you, though we were more acquaintances than friends. I know we had some classes together, and that you were friends with a guy named Bruce Burns. I also know that you were both way smarter than I was, although I managed to muddle through somehow. The pictures are great - I havent seen anything like them outside of the yearbook. If there are more, let's see 'em. Best wishes with Tabblo; it looks great!
