AdobeRPG vs RPG created by Mdr on Nov 8, 2009:
Mdr said at 6:54 p.m. on Nov 8, 2009:
Hi!

I just noticed that my newest Tabblo isn't rendered as beautifully in Firefox as it is in Safari. I am told this has to do with rendering of AdobeRPG vs. RPG. Having exported my jpgs out of Adobe Lightroom I must have done them AdobeRPG without realizing. Next step in my process is to create a book out of the same pictures so now I'm wondering: Will the printer take my AdobeJPGs and print them as beautifully as I hope they will be?

Thanks,
:)

http://www.theglobeandmail.com:80/news/technology/article852117.ece

It says you just RECENTLY WENT PUBLIC lol Antonio! There's no search bar still!!!, noone outside U.S. can 'seamlessly' use tabblo online/offline tomake then order products available softbook, poster etc. and NOW YOU'RE trying to make it so we can sell 'stock photos' if desired.....why was this not announced to us in Tabblo publicly? IS that why i'm seeing MORE ANE MORE of the watermarks, copyright etc. on the 'pro profile tabs' so to speak lol ...

There seems to be little or no action on some 'bug fixing' and loss of search bar ...is HP not allotting the proper funding for rudimentary programming fixes?

Really, I thought you'd been public since June 2006? according to stacy's mashup archive site. ;-)

Very intersting Patty! Thank you for finding this for us.
Ned said at 12:37 p.m. on Sep 26, 2009:
I'm not sure what the Globe & Mail is up to, but this piece sounds like it was written in 2006. There's no mention of HP owning Tabblo, we no longer sell frames, etc. I think this is an old column accidentally dated this year.
Pattymaryclare said at 9:51 p.m. on Sep 26, 2009:
Thx Ned and I kinda thot the same thing - it was an online google search actually that I did...having been sent a 'screenshot' from another tabblo/another country/continet that said u were preparing/programming etc?? to offer a sort of 'stock photos dept. on Tabblo for sale of your own pics' etc...plus way back in whenever that article came out ...it mentioned Antonio's vision of same deal. However, When i 'read the article' there was a huge HP ad beside it - of no matter! You ARE marketing this as an international site yes/no? Why then can't you ship your products outside U.S. and again any news ON 'the coming soon said Eric' search bar? any news at all? Thanks for your speedy response and I thot it kind of 'hinky' too this mis-dated online article......Patty (have a good weekend)
Pattymaryclare said at 5:49 p.m. on Sep 28, 2009:
helloooooo? anybody home?...LOL

Ned, Antonio...any answers forthcoming to my 'other' questions greatly appreciated:
i.e. 1. INTERNATIONAL PHOTOG. SITE = INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CAPABILITY? why only U.S.. WE ALL BUY HP products even my printer is one...(smile)
2. THE MENTION OF A 'SELL' PHOTOS THRU TABBLO IDEA? OR ABANDONED?
3. THE 'MIA' soon to be re-instated (the 12th of never? {;-) search bar?

Your friendly bug (OOPS! tigers and lions...it appears you've been bugged!)AGAIN ....in all good fun guyz but all seriousness too! PMC

Anyone else havingserious trouble with Tabblo in Windows Explorer? created by Grandbrother on Aug 1, 2009:
Grandbrother said at 4:46 a.m. on Aug 1, 2009:
I haven't been able to edit a new Tabblo for over a week now. I can get the page open, but I can't change the image sizes, or swap them to design a flow of pictures - I can do virtually nothing. I noticed I have a "recommended browser check" notification on my Tabblo edit page, but I've verified that I'm running the latest version of Explorer, version 8. Not sure if this is a problem unique to me, ore if maybe others are having problemslike this in windows.

Sorry to post this here instead of in the "issues" forum, but I couldn't seem to get that page open. Anyway, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There is a problem with the editing tools and how they work in IE8 so you'll experience the exact problems you've described. I recommend using Firefox or IE7 until we update the code, which we're in the process of working on. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Changes with the Invitation functionality created by Ericf on Jul 9, 2009:
Ericf said at 5:04 p.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
There have been a few changes I'd like to post.

You can now only invite someone via their tabblo member name if you put them in your circle and *in return* they have added you to their circle.

In other words, if you've added someone to your circle but they haven't added you, they will not get your invite. You can still invite anyone you want outside of Tabblo, as long as you have their email address.

I hope this clarifies any recent confusion.

I think we have some censorship here.
Ericf said at 6:53 p.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
I figured I'd have time to eat dinner before someone typed the word "Censorship." =)

No censorship here. My first post was incorrect. The functionality change only affected tabblo members, not everyone. I made a post that I was removing it and replacing it with correct information,

Sorry about the confusion.
Lifequest22 said at 7:26 p.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
LOL---Hope you had a good dinner. Didn't see a post about removing. Too bad cuz it was such a good rant.

So I hope I understand this now. The invitations can still be sent to people outside of tabblo BUT for tabblo members to receive an invite, they must be in one's circle and one must be in their circle. So for example, if PKeener is in my circle but i am not in hers, then if I were to send her an invite, she would not receive it. Is this correct.

And what is the rationale behind this Eric. I understood your explaination the first time re: spam, which made sense. But this is a bit perplexing. The only reason I can figure out is that someone has complained about receiving invites that they find bothersome from other tabbloers .

Any way, hope you enjoyed dinner and have some good desert. ....Linda
Ericf said at 8:19 a.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
We did have people complaining about receiving invitations without requesting them. Again, I'm sorry about the reposting...I just didn't want the incorrect information out there and I thought it would be confusing.
Pattymaryclare said at 10:03 a.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
Well then....so we CAN NOT AGAIN invite outside tabblo membership peeps via email AND inside tabblo via their user name only? separated by a comman as well? Ericf said at 12:51 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
Yep. This change only effects sending invitations to people within Tabblo. Ff you've added someone to your circle but they haven't added you, they will not get your invite. You can still invite anyone you want outside of Tabblo

Good Morning Andre,

No, there is no way to delete messages in your sent folder. I've got an enhancement request in with the engineers for that very thing. I also thought it would be nice to paginate the messages too so that pages doesn't take so long to load.

The time table, as it currently stands, is to focus on Tabblo improvements in the next month, so I'll continue to push for these updates. This team has quite a bit on the docket and I'm trying to keep Tabblo.com as bright a blip on the radar as I possibly can.

Tabloops General Issues - In Consulting with my LEAD APPLICATION DEVELOPER friend... created by Pattymaryclare on May 15, 2009:
Pattymaryclare said at 10:37 p.m. on May 15, 2009:
I RESPECTFULLY submit, that clearly seems to be a lack of funding that's what it always comes down to...search field TO FIND A USER NAME is an absolutely rudimentary task to accomplish, at most 2 hrs for any competent progammer. I'm talking to one right now. He asks me how many users there may be on this site Eric, Ned or Antonio (knowing of course new folks join each day) as it relates to your present bandwidth?? His words and I'm sure yours...'What's your pipe?" He feels this is why we have tabblo tool mega-problems such LatentE, me and all of us have with the tools doing what they want or reverting back later. 'Stuff is timing out or you don't have a 'beefy' enough server."

So, this seems to be an all inclusive answer FOLKS...there aren't the funds available from HP to Tabblo to supply any of these fixes. SO I THINK WE CAN SURMISE WHY WE ARE NOT GETTING ANSWERS FROM TABBLO EXEC. after a year or more of asking. As someone here said, forget who, yes Eric and perhaps NED AND ANTONIO'S have no 'clout to get the dough'. The money ain't there or perhaps the money stream from the sale of softbooks, photocubes, posters, etc. isnt there either.

YOU WOULD THINK THAT TO GENERATE MORE REVENUE LOGICALLY, THEY WOULD INVEST IN THIS SITE ...THUS MORE FOLKS WOULD STAY AND MORE FOLKS WOULD JOIN AND PROBABLY THEN, AFTER HAVING NOT MANY ISSUES WITH TABBLO MAKING, THEN BUY MORE TABBLO CONCEPT PRODUCTS.

So, please feel free to jump in Tabblo Exec if any of these thoughts are not correct...........PMC (and others await)
Andre. said at 7:37 a.m. on May 16, 2009:
LOL I would not rant about it anymore. It's a "business" issue and not the technical one. Search box is offered on Blogger as a free gadget. No big deal.

Dang! When I asked my question last week, I had no idea it was so emotional. I've since learned that a real simple tool is to search in google with "SEARCH site:www.tabblo.com" (where SEARCH = whatever you're searching for).

Leaves me wondering why someone would expend so much energy in badmouthing a site instead of just using another. I like Tabblo, personally.
Pattymaryclare said at 6:08 p.m. on May 17, 2009:
Hello Kevin whoever you are - likely fairly new and not fully knowledgable about all the functionality issues some of we 'older/longer' tabbloers have 'badmouthed, asked, begged, pleaded with about!....firstly, I didnt start this thread and secondly, badmouthing as you term it IS A BAD OR WRONG word IN THIS CONTEXT!

We are simply sharing information that we gather and some call it rant (again I didn't start that word either) and MY INPUT was not meant to state anything other than what a professional computer developer/progammer knows about certain questions....QUESTIONS YOU YOURSELF BEGAN ASKING not very long ago. I'm not around as much as I used to be but was surprised a few months ago when I looked for it and couldn't find it. I wonder why they did away with it because it is definitely necessary. I still love Tabblo and I find other ways to work around this problem. Hopefully somebody will get on this soon!

Is it just me? I tried to instruct someone yesterday how to find a particular Tabblo I have, and I said to go to Tabblo.com and just search on the title of my Tabblo. But when I went to the site on her computer, I don't see a search field anywhere on the whole site.

If we're verbally inviting someone to a particular Tabblo (ours or someone else's), how can they find it?
Lifequest22 said at 2:40 p.m. on May 15, 2009:
Kevin--Tabblo is a very unique site. the engineers seem to refuse to give us a simple search engine. Eric F has been asking for one for over a year but his requests fall of deaf ears.

But this makes Tabblo like a site from the early days of the internet. So we all feel as though we are in a land that time passed over. While other sites continue to grow and expand, Tabblo remains in the dark ages. LOL.

I was talking to some kids at one of our local Tampa grammar schools about the problem and they said they would be willing to create a search engine as a school project for Tabblo. They figured they could work on it during their lunch break in the school cafeteria. Said it would only take a week or so to get it completed. And their teacher said she would give them extra credit.

I'm sorry Tabbo gods, Gretel made me say this. Or maybe it was Andre. Or I think it may have been Leftofcenter.

Eric, I'm very glad to propose some points:

1. To enlarge the spectrum of the possibilities of formatting photographs directly on the site (to increase the scant collection of the means of formatting, especially, it is desirable to obtain the possibility to change color and the thickness of the framework of photo).
2. RSS of my page
3.Tabblo's Mail works badly, [large communications are not reflected completely, but it is only fragmentary]
4. Is possible, the organization Of 'Areopagus Tabblo' from the most authoritative of the users. They can select alternative Tabblo of the Day and Tabblo of the Month. I think, James [SirNicolay] can help in this question
5. To make work of the groups of of more accessible, to carry out some groups by the main page and to change them is regular (daily, monthly)
6. European users always are late, since the date of publication there tabblo is determined not by time zone, but by time into Boston. It can be, this is possible to fix this issue?

regards,
den~

1. Search engine (that will take care of finding groups and Users and be much easier for friends and guests who are not on Tabblo)

2. Better functionality of mail box.

3. Hide the tool bar when creating. It is way better than the original, but would love to hide it

1. intergrate a search box with one of the 5 major search engines on the page. this isn't a difficult item, but seems to be a licencing issue? Please tell us....

2. would love to be able to add a 'custom' background or field submitted as a .jpg instead of plain colors, like the grass pic...

3. RSS support, or a 'low fi' method of informing of new works posted.

4. an optional way to integrate a freemail service to do notifications and take the load off tabblo's servers.

5. [the following may be controversial] Multiple TOD's. selected by users who volunteer to do a certain number of views of all works submitted, selected by tabblo.com staff, and selected by a random process, as a way to encourage users to look at more tabblos (I'm feeling lucky sort of link).

6. slight rewrite of page code to match time on user system or use a selectable time based around GMT, so it's easier on users all over the world.

7. some other shapes of photos other than square or rectangular.

8. a toggle on/off for tools.

9. a low-fi option for those who have capped bandwith every month, and have option to view it in that format instead of standard one.

10. ways to custom edit your digest mailing, including if one to show 'random' new tabblos if you want.

FINALLY - whew!! open developer.tabblo.com to alpha and beta public testers to see if the new apps will work out in the field.
Eduardo.affonso said at 9:35 p.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
1. Versions of Tabblo in other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French...). It would make it easier for people from other countries to join it and manage its tools.

2. Although it's a site meant for photography, it could include videos. Many people post links for YouTube, and it would be great to have both (photos & videos) in the same page. One video per page would be enough.

3. Tabblo is, in my opinion, more than a site for photos. It's sort of a visual blog (and sometimes becomes a chat room...). Wish I could manage comments the way I do in my blog (free comments, comments previosly submitted, no comments at all etc).

4. Inbox messages could be sent to our e-mail, just like the comments are.

5. ToD is an interesting tool, but there should be more categories (for newcomers, creative layouts, technical excellence etc). What about "Tabblos of the Day", 3 or 5 of them, showing a wider range of possibilities of use of the site?

Most of what I REALLY want to suggest have already been raised (search, date of posting, more photo editing options..)

This is not really top 5 but some random ideas which you might look into:

1) Feature a member for a week or a month. There are so MANY good artists here with STUNNING photos. We can have like a group discussion where we make the member have the "hot seat." We can ask about his/her favorite tabblos, unforgettable or remarkable tabblo experiences, who his/her influences are, faves, etc. :)

2) TODs are nice, but usually there are also so many good tabblos which are being overlooked. I dunno how to remedy this. LOL. But maybe, as Den suggested, the members (especially the regulars) can also have a say on the picking of the TOD. :)

I think the concept of "Most Popular Tabblos" is a bit confusing. How can a tabblo with a few visits be "popular"? I initially thought that the tabblos featured here got the most number of hits. It took me a time to realize that this is determined by the "wink" hits. There are many users who don't even know what the "wink" feature is for. I suggest that maybe the "wink" link should be at the bottom of the tabblo page AND also the Make Fave link. Maybe the tabblos' "unique" visits (only one count per user/per guest view) can be the determining factor for the "Most Popular Tabblo."

Maybe a rating system can also be implemented? Or "props" system like the one in xanga.com, I think.

3) Html codes within the tabblo will be great.

4) Music embedded with the tabblo. :) So that each tabblo will be more than just a visual treat. :)

5) I think all members will appreciate promos... or even contests with PRIZES. :)

6) Better text composition format for ALL kinds of browsers. I usually shift from Safari to Firefox because Safari does not edit text well.

7) Maybe some integration with other third-party sites. Maybe facebook, multiply, or myspace? :)

I just discovered this... and the question in Tabblo Discuss...
I have to agree with Kelly & James... their ideas are really good...

1. I like the map idea a lot... (similar to my feature request long ago)...

2. A search box to find tabblos with photos containing "San Francisco" or "Utah" for instance... so many people don't put their tabblos into the groups and so it's impossible to find them on your own...

3. more layouts where you can stretch your photo to fill the entire screen without leaving a black 2" border on the right (like this one has)... The only layout I've found that works is the 6 across borderless... and I hate starting from there with each tabblo when it has lots of photos... you about have to then delete them all and add them one at a time from the light box...

4. an instruction page for new comers... I've never found one... other than the tabblo that James made last winter...

5. TOD... I agree with the comments of others... some days I think it is hard to find a really good one... and then there are days where there are 2 or 3 or even 4 that are WONDERFUL... and much better then some of the earlier TODs yet you can only choose 1 that day... Sad!!

Guess what... I changed my e-mail address and NOW I'm getting notifications... FYI... in case anyone else is having trouble with this issue...

Oh and one more thing... that "Most Popular" group on the main page is so not right... there can be a tabblo in it that has only 5 or so views... so all 5 people must have "winked"... and like someone said a lot of people don't even know about the wink... or forget to do it... some people wink at their friends tabblos whether they are good or not... ;)
There needs to be a different system for this... or regulation of it...

Thanks... I love Tabblo!!! It is just so fun...

1. Ability to organize your personal address book (contacts). So you can group your users like friends, family, co-workers, etc. and then just set privacy or distribution to those groups.
2. Also allow you to put names with the email addresses (like a regular address book) as well as show the relationship between email address and tabblo user name. Once our contacts register with Tabblo, we only see the user name and sometimes it's not always evident who it is.
3. More flexibility with the backgrounds. Either offer more texture-like backgrounds (like the grass or linen), holiday themes, or give us the ability to use our own jpegs as backgrounds.
4. Why can't you use one of your photos already uploaded in Tabblo as your avatar or group picture? Right now the "browse" feature only allows you to look on your hard drive, not your Tabblo photo library.
5.More font and size options for text. Not just bold and italics, how about underline too? Also more options for the tabblo title -- location, italics, bold, etc.

So there you go!

Unfortunately ever since HP took over Tabblo, they seem to go out of their way to make the site as user unfriendly as possible for Mac users. First the iPhoto uploader was dropped, now the new uploader.

With the old uploader, I was able to use the finder to select Media and pick the iphoto albums directly and all photos in it and upload it one shot. With this new uploader, you guys are trying to recreate the finder, but without the media options. I really wish HP paid a bit more attention to Mac users. Oh well, time to start investigating other options.

We've got a few Mac users in our group here so even though we're part of HP we still keep all platforms in mind when we roll stuff out. iPhoto is a great tool just like Picasa and the other methods we used to support. The problem was finding the engineering time to write new code every time each one of these pieces of software was updated by their developer, which was often. The tool we're using now works with every platform, is pretty easy to understand and it's robust. If you've got any suggestions on how to improve it I'd be happy to report them.

JUST SEARCHED ON URBAN DICTIONARY: 'tabblo isn't defined yet.' THIS JUST SUBMITTED AND AWAITING 'VERIFICATION':

tabblo
A tabblo is a story told with photographs, title, text, quotations and a layout format of your choosing for the Internet.

Derived from the word: tab¡¤leau (tab¡äl¨¡ä, ta bl¨¡ä)
noun pl. -¡¤leaux¡ä-l¨z¡ä, -bl¨z¡ä or -¡¤leaus
1. a striking, dramatic scene or picture
Eample in sentences:
I made a tabblo composed of photographs I took, then added captions, some text and a title plus a meaninful quotation. Then I picked the nicest colors for the background and title colors and invited my friends and family to view my 'Talking Trees' tabblo on the Internet.

IT VERY WELL MAY SOON BE!! AN 'official word' Antonio! We shall see! ~pmc

I can't believe that I am the only person who is NOT getting notifications...
I can live with searching for the new tabblos that I never get told about...

But it is frustrating!!

I can't live with never knowing when someone comments on my tabblos... I can't keep checking them all... I check the newer ones periodically but I have over 100 to be checking.

One of the fun things about Tabblo was getting comments from people on my photos & tabblos...

I heard from another gal yesterday that she is no longer getting notified either... the problem just started for her... it's been going on since the end of April for me...

PLEASE do something about this... or tell me what to do... HELP!!!

And if YOU are also not getting notified... write Tabblo & complain...
Saulblum said at 9:35 p.m. on Jun 7, 2008:
Maybe there's some problem with your mail provider, where Tabblo e-mails are suddenly being rejected? (For example, a spam filter could be catching them.) Do you have another e-mail account you could try setting as your Tabblo address and see if that one works?

People are disappearing from my circle too... and I have to add them again.

I don't have another e-mail address... don't really want one... but... IF that's the only way to fix this... then maybe I'll have to do that. Thanks!!

At least SOMEONE finally replied to my frustrations!!!

Just wanted to tell you that I like the tabbed lightbox better than the old one. I was a bit worried about it because of a few posts I've read about how you can no longer drag and drop your photos into it like before, but I found that once you've added a photo to it, and you're working on a tabblo, the photo stays available to you until you finish. If you click on the trash icon, on the side of the photo, the photo is put back into the lightbox, and that's a lot easier to do than trying to maneuver it back in with your cursor.

Emmabro,

I find to get a long photo into a Tabblo is to create the size proportional to the image you want to create and at a high resolution. I will share a poster I made with a large image.

To create one photo in 3 different areas requires the same technique, a simple way to accoomplish the separate images is to upload the same photo with different names.

Goox luck...Patrick, OTM BOOKS

Full page size for soft book created by Kevinb5 on Apr 18, 2008:

I want to make full-page photos in Photoshop to add to a soft book. What dimensions (ratio) should I make my new file?
Ericf said at 3:44 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008:
We have a "full" page format with will render a photo as full bleed onto the page. I recommend using the highest resolution image file as possible.
Kevinb5 said at 4:28 p.m. on Apr 21, 2008:
I will certainly make it full resolution, but I want to make it the same dimensions as the page in the book. If I make it a different dimension than the page (say, 8x10 vs. 7x9), I'm afraid it will crop some side off. Do I just make my image the same dimension as the book itself?
Ericf said at 10:41 a.m. on Apr 23, 2008:
I would make them 7x9 and use the full bleed formatting on each page that you want full coverage. You can always view the PDF of the book to get a rough idea of the borders.

Flickr issues?? created by JeroldsSis on Apr 16, 2008:

I tried uploading pictures from Flickr but the only thing that showed up was an empty box with that ever-popular little red X in the upper left hand corner. I tried it two times using two different browsers but it still wouldn't work. I then uploaded the picture directly from my pictures on my computer and it worked fine. Is there a glitch with Flickr?

Hi!

Some of you international Tabblo users may share with me the frustration of not being able to order Tabblo products to your home. Yesterday I received a delivery from Tabblo right to my door and here's how:

I used the services of www.shopusa.com

They specialize in receiving orders that can only be shipped within the US and delivering them internationally. If they have a branch in your country then they can help you. I don't know how widely they have branched out but they have an office in Iceland so I'm pretty sure they have presence almost everywhere!

Hope that helps,

Zoom and Resize Questions created by Burmashave on Apr 14, 2008:
Burmashave said at 11:41 a.m. on Apr 14, 2008:
I have grepped about the site; however, I haven't found an answer regarding the relationship between zooming a photo and viewing it in the finished tabblo.

Specifically, I want to make tiled tabblo's in which I take part of a photo, crop it and zoom in on just one part so that the tiled photo becomes just an interesting part of the "full" sized photo when viewed.

This is the behavior I am experiencing:
- Use any zoom level within resolution of the original photo
- "Crop" the photo to show only part of the original
- User sees only cropped/zoomed portion when selecting photo in tabblo.

On the other hand, if I only crop the photo, the user sees the entire original when selecting the tiled photo in the tabblo.

Interestingly, when selecting "Properties" of the image, it seems that the entire original is always displayed, regardless of crop and zoom.

Is there a way to use the zoom tool so that the user is always presented with the full image when selecting images from the tabblo?

I've made a demonstration on the tabblo on which I am currently working:
http://www.tabblo.com/studio/stories/view/1418294/
Scroll to the very bottom and there are 2 tiles made from the same image. What I wish to do is to have them display identically when clicked on.

Also, is there a way to set "Best fit for my screen" as the default for all viewers?
Burmashave said at 5:32 p.m. on Apr 17, 2008:
Oh well, I'll just go ahead and publish as is, although the finished product is not at all what I want.

It's too bad. I like the concept of Tabblo; however, it just doesn't work for me in practice, and I *have* tried to make it work. I may do my next "tableaux" by hand (HTML tables, mapped images, etc.) and publish it myself. I think that says something, given the time and effort it takes to make a similar set of arranged images with links to originals.

LatentE said at 2:00 p.m. on Apr 8, 2008:
I see that Flickr is offering "New" printing services through HP and Tabblo with picture books and cubes, etc. Congrats. Hopefully that means there will be some increase in revenue for all involved. The Flickr printing agreement seems a bit onerous, requiring access to "private" images. The wording could have been better. "Access to your photos (including private photos)." How can you print an image if you can't access it? They should probably just have an image tag for printing for those that have images they are concerned about the privacy of. Maybe a "double super secret" private tag?

Could this, an anticipated jump in demand, be is the reason for the tabblo.com switch over to HP servers?
Ericf said at 2:20 p.m. on Apr 8, 2008:
The server switch has been in the works for some time and has nothing to do with the Flickr services we're offering. Thanks for checking out some of our new offerings!

Ned said at 11:37 a.m. on Apr 3, 2008:
We don't feel good about the fact that we were counting robot visits as views. We do feel good about fixing the problem. Now view counts are more accurate and worthwhile.
Pattymaryclare said at 12:58 a.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
uh er exactly WHAT ARE 'robot visits' Ned? I heard all about it but who generated them and how did it happen?????? I've also discovered that there are 'alter-ego' tabblo identities with ficticious names/profiles etc. I kinda' know how they can get in from diff. email accts/browsers etc....but is this ALLOWED ON Tabblo? Is thee a monitoring system in place to find them, and if found, what is your policy re: allowing 'them' to stay or removing them? Thank you Ned for YOUR response only!
Ned said at 10:48 a.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
Search engines visit web pages to see what they contain, so they can add them to their indexes. Other programs also traverse the web, reading pages for various other purposes. All of these programs are known as spiders or robots, to distinguish them from people looking at pages in their browsers.

We used to count those robot visits as views, which resulted in artificially high view counts. Some time in March, we fixed that problem on the site, and now only actual people are counted as views. Search engines can visit the page all they like, and it won't add to the view count.

As to alias identities, that is a trickier issue. We encourage people to be creative, and that can sometimes involve alter egos. We try to steer the community with a light hand, and this does sometimes involve identifying and limiting excessive behavior.
Pattymaryclare said at 12:11 p.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
Thx Ned.I had a very good idea as to how 'robot views' happened; glad you curtailed it but last tab I made had HUGE 3# of guest views. Can Tabblo exec view 'community situational tabs' as 'guests'? Also, wish to know how you actually accomplish limiting excessive behaviour, in which ways? Lastly, THIS SITE WAS TOUTED AT ONE TIME AS "A PLACE FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS' (can't find slogan anymore on site. Do you think the vast majority of community considers FAKE IDENTIES, FAKE 'LIFTED' PHOTOS (only occasionally ) MOSTLY CARTOONING OR CARTOON SATIRICAL CHARACTERS as 'photography' and that they have validity in this venue? Surely there are other places for lampooning and cartoon characters made with 'fake' photos in other sites or blogs...Your response greatly appreciated. pmc
Ericf said at 1:57 p.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
For the most part we've got a pretty good community here at Tabblo and more rigid rules aren't required.. Of course there are those that like mischief, but we don't have restrictions on who can create accounts.
Pattymaryclare said at 4:43 p.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
Thank you Mr. Foster although Ned had already made clear the 'light hand' on tabblo account/user identity issues which has been MORE than evident for me. However, my question as to REAL story/photography community vx. cartoon caricature and 'borrowed face' satirical 'columns' such as one might have viewed in 'National Lampoon' or 'Mad Magazine, has been left UNANSWERED... I had wished for a reply on this matter from Ned as stated at beginning of post. Thank you.
Pattymaryclare said at 5:02 p.m. on Jun 20, 2008:
p.s. IT IS AND WAS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE 'FRACTAL' tabs and groups WERE ASKED BY EXECUTIVE TO REFRAIN FROM POSTING.....AS THEY WERE NOT 'REAL' PHOTOS BUT SOFTWARD GENERATED..... IS THAT A 'LIGHT HAND' AS WELL....rhetorical question but goes to 'point'! ty

Few "Guests" created by LatentE on Mar 12, 2008:
LatentE said at 9:14 a.m. on Mar 12, 2008:
I noticed what seemed like a fairly sudden drop off in the number of viewers of my tabblos. On checking the tabblo views there seemed to be far less "Guests" than in the past. I thought I might try to quantify that feeling so I charted the "Guest" count of three of my most viewed tabblos for the last month or so.

http://www.tabblo.com/studio/item/7841237/

There appears to be a sudden drop off on March 6. I was wondering if anything happened around then. A DNS loss somewhere (though I'd guess many members would be complaining through email if that happened)? Google still seems to link to Tabblo but I have no way of telling if there's been a sudden drop off in referred links from any prior regular source. Any ideas that can be shared?
Dunster said at 10:41 a.m. on Mar 12, 2008:
We put out some new code last week. One of the changes was an improved set of searchbot filters. There were some searchbots that we weren't screening right beforehand; some of those views were actually by robots, not human beings.

We've excluded bots before, but there are always new ones being added. In this case we screened out a couple particularly active ones.

The number of humans coming to the site is the same, but the number of views is now more accurate. The difference is particularly evident in older, more heavily linked tabblos. The bots loved them.
LatentE said at 5:01 p.m. on Mar 12, 2008:
It's not just in older tabblos. It was in the recent ones that I noticed how the views implied an inner "club" quality, with almost no "guests." I used older and more heavily viewed tabblos to better quantify any changes. But if that's the reality then that's the reality. Thanks for the reply.

Dunster said at 12:08 a.m. on Feb 6, 2008:
I'd help you if I could, but we just can't crank out books that quickly. There are a couple of factors: the pages have to "dry" before they can be bound, and the binding has to "cure." The pages are printed on an Indigo press and our schedule on that press is pretty tight, which is another complicating factor.

The site language says "6 business days" to print a book. We often do it faster than that, but 3 business days is, unfortunately, faster than we can pull off at this point. I'm sorry about that.

Please let us know what you think!

Type:

pasta site:tabblo.com/studio/group/

where "pasta" is replaced by what you are looking for. Google does a pretty decent job on this.

You can also use the built in search functionality. You'll notice that you can specify what you're searching for by unchecking the search options.

To search groups simply uncheck every option BUT Groups.

Dunster said at 6:23 p.m. on Dec 17, 2007:
Managing an online community is always a challenge - there are conflicts, just like any other group.

We listen when people use the "contact us" link, or mark tabblos as "may offend." Generally a private note is enough to calm things down. Sometimes (rarely) we have to do more drastic things like take down tabblos or delete accounts. Whatever actions we take are framed by the terms of service and the privacy policy.

Please feel free to let us know about specific tabblos you are concerned with. I'd prefer you used a private method, like the contact us page.

I noticed that some tabblos use Zapfino font for title (and comments header) if available, that is, on Macs. The second font listed in the style is Georgia. That's the font that shows up in Windows and in the preview icons on the site.

So my question is, is this intentional or some leftover? I know that you guys at Tabblo use Macs, or at least have until recently, so I'd presume the former, but despite its artful shapes it's not the best one in readability department (unlike Georgia).

Not an issue really, just curious, hence this group and not Tabblo Issues.

Double page spread in large photo book. created by Adilj on Aug 31, 2007:
Adilj said at 3:01 p.m. on Aug 31, 2007:
I am making a photo book and wanted to make a double page spread. Now I know tabblo does not support that but I can do a manual split of the image and achieve the same if I know how much of the page is lost in the binding. Any got a clue?

Also, does the book viewer (the one where we can turn pages) account for the binding (I do not think so but just to be sure).

Can we get a larger size version of the book viewer? That would be really neat.
Ericf said at 3:14 p.m. on Aug 31, 2007:
Our printing process tries to minimize loss and can vary up to 1/8th of an inch. I've seen double page layout and most look really nice.

If you've got a nice wide shot I would recommend you use it for the cover, which can be one large panoramic shot. It's looks fantastic!
Adilj said at 3:18 p.m. on Aug 31, 2007:
Thanks for the quick reply. I will keep a 1/8 inch overlap and see how it comes out.

Thanks.
DVP said at 1:43 p.m. on Sep 3, 2007:
I've used a double page spread and in the 4 books I printed it lined up acceptably 3 out of 4 times. The binding edge on the books were larger than I expected and the tabblo process did add some margin for safety's sake. (You can see the white space if you look at the binding on the vertical edge)

Having print experience I left close to 1/4 inch on MOST of my photos. The ones that I didn't leave that margin on, closer to the center of the book, were the ones that suffered most. As far as I can tell the binding edge is not incrementally adjusted to provide for a deep book.

Keep in mind that 1/8" variation on a 4x4 inch book is proportionally larger than in a big book.
Adilj said at 8:52 a.m. on Sep 4, 2007:
I am not sure I understand...I am making a big book that is going to have close to 80 pages. There are a few double page spreads in there.
I have split the image into two keeping a 1/8th inc overlap in the middle. In the photo viewer it lines up nicely.

Are you saying I should have a 1/4 in overlap?

I have ordered a big book before (38 pages) and the binding seems to eat up roughly 1/8th of an inch too (though it is hard to tell).

I think adding a double page spread feature to the book editor would nicely solve all this calculation issues...Considering that the cover page already allows for such a spread would'nt it be easy to add a control to switch two facing pages into single page or double page "mode"?
I will post this to the feature request forum.

Shocking Tabblo Book Banner Ad created by Flash on Aug 21, 2007:
Flash said at 11:35 a.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
Ordered the larger book w/16 pages. Went with an artsy sepia tone. I was disappointed to be 'surprised' by the rich red colorful tabblo banner logo on my last page. This is one page that did not show up while previewing my work before going to print.

I am considerably impressed by the whole process from upload, through editing and ordering. The finished product is magnificent except for the unexpected advertisement on the final page.
Marcif said at 9:01 p.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
I think the logo is fairly standard for all companies that provide this service. I actually like it because I don't have to remember where I ordered the particular book from. Once you get over the shock, it might be ok.
Ned said at 10:43 p.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
We certainly didn't mean for the logo on the last page to feel like a banner ad. We were thinking of it more like an imprint.

Hello,

I placed an order for a print about a month ago and received nothing. I posted a query to your help desk and I got a detailed message saying you are discontinuing your digital print service?

If that is so, why do I see the purchase tab right up front? Why are you discontinuing the print service? I hope HP has some plans to integrate some kind of print services in to your web site. I would assume that is why you were bought out.

Thanks,
G

Discontinuing the print service is a pretty big change. I am sad about that! But things do change ... I can understand.

I'd be curious if this site is part of the long term strategy? Any thoughts from Tabblo????
Dunster said at 2:42 p.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
We did discontinue the silver-halide print product. That means the regular 4x6s prints aren't available for purchase.

The other print products (books, posters, postcards) are still available - they are available for purchase.

We dropped the silver-halide prints because they didn't have a lot of users and they weren't cheap. We're considering how to bring them back in the long run. We're really expanding our partnership list, so I think that one of them will help bring it back.
Govardha said at 3:21 p.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
I just wanted a regular 8x10 print, nothing about silver-halide prints. My order was still not processed and is still stuck in pending state.
Dunster said at 4:10 p.m. on Aug 21, 2007:
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. The entire "prints" product was printed using a silver halide process. That's the 4x6, the 8x10, etc.

The posters, postcards, books are all printed on inkjet printers of various types. Those products are still available. (Including, I might add, a 8.5x11 poster that is pretty close in size to a 8x10).

Hi!

I'm a great fan of Tabblo and I praise it to everyone who cares to listen. I've been using it for over a year and I can't think presenting my photos any other way. I love Tabblo, there I said it!

For the past few days I've been working on a wedding album for a friend using a Tabblo book. And it's done and she's thrilled and I'm thrilled and I proceed to checkout. Under 'Country' in Shipping address I come to a screeching halt; there are only two countries! And then it hits me: You don't do international shipping! I'm in Iceland!

I'm quite frankly dumbfounded.

Isn't the business model selling me printouts? It is just selling printouts in the US? What about the rest of the world? How can this be??

So where does this leave me? Do I need to find a new service? Will I have to create my book again in another software? Please, please, please tell me that this is easy to fix. I'm more than ready to pay you for the shipping up here.

Unfortunately we don't have international shipping at this time. The challenge has been customs; the paperwork necessary to ship the books has been difficult to produce reliably. And when we make a mistake, the repercussions are really bad.

We'll bring international shipping back at some point in the future.
Mdr said at 5:48 p.m. on Aug 6, 2007:
Though I find it difficult to understand that this poses a problem (there being other websites that ship outside the US and thus must have solved the problem) I do know that customs have a tendency to be a royal pain in the...

You must understand how this affects the usage of your product by your international audience. For me personally this means that I must impose on friends and family in the States acting as postmen on your behalf. Which means that there will be much less purchases. So I am assuming that you are working on this and am counting on being able to send my christmas gifts directly.

In the light of this it might be a good idea to remove the disclaimer for international shipping in the 'Shipping' page of the checkout process.

Still a bit irked,

Before I ride off to the sunset, is there any chance you'll have an overseas shipping option soon? How about DHL/other express mail service? That would leave me handling the nasty customs?

I am a very patient person in general and I really like Tabblo, but I am very colse to the point of unsubbing and forgetting I ever heard of Tabblo. Please please please at least let me know that you are working on this and trying to improve it.

I have noticed one thing. In most layouts (not 6 col). If you place the picture just a pixel to far right, it will still be there in the edit mode, but when you finish it will be reduced to a little tiny dot. I always place the pic a little to the left and pull it out the last few pixels, so I know when it reach the right limit. Short, if you place the pic to far right you want see it in edit, but it will be tiny in finished mode. if you pull the pic bigger it will stop at the right limit and can't go to far. I don't know if this is your problem but thought it would be good to know

Often, more the last month, when I am finished and want to publish my Tabblo everything seems to work good. I go to share and click up all people in my circle and select all (69). A little later when I check it says that the tabblo isn't finished, so I go back and finish it again, and see that only 14 are invited. So next, I open the log to see who the invited 14 are, and in an other window my address book to invite the rest. Now there is a problem. In the log invitation list people are named by USER name and in the Address book by their REAL name, have to compare avatars to figure out who is who in many cases. So question #1 why isn't the tabblo always finished when it should be? #2 why does the two lists don't show the same, like REAL or User ? It is very time consuming to match the two!
Dunster said at 11:46 a.m. on Jul 26, 2007:

Dunster said at 11:02 a.m. on Jun 29, 2007:
We have done some EXIF work. For instance, if you upload a photo, we now honor the rotation indicated in the EXIF data. In the photo detail pages we show when the photo was actually taken, too.

Was there more EXIF stuff that you were looking for?
Cruising said at 3:14 p.m. on Jun 29, 2007:
I'd like to see 2 options.

Screen realestate - looking for width created by Mdr on Jun 26, 2007:
Mdr said at 6:55 p.m. on Jun 26, 2007:
I'm looking for wider tabblos. I can see from a discussion below that Cruising managed to make a wider tabblo and that Ned commented that this is 'the Borderless 6 col' layout.

Are there plans to offer layouts that make more use of the screen width? With around 50% off the internet population using 1024x768 screen resolution and most of the other 50% using an even larger screen resolution, it seems a bit old-fashioned to use 800x600 as a basis for all the tabblos. Is this perhaps a printing limitation?

Now, even if no wide layouts are in the books, I am more than happy to use the 'Borderless 6 col' layout since it already exists. But I just can't seem to find it. Can you tell me where I can select it when I am configuring my new tabblo? I'm bursting at the seams with this new travelogue, you see :)

Thanks!

The reason I am asking is because a recently joined member has started posting tabblos of herself and another woman baring their breasts. It is very hard sometimes to distinguish what is art and what is solicitation, but two of her tabblos, as I see it, look very much like the sort that would normally have a 'Call Now' phone number beneath them. I'm not a prude, but I would hate to see Tabblo become an adult 'pick up' forum, or even worse, be inundated with sexual solicitations.
AliDar said at 1:20 a.m. on Jun 20, 2007:
The title didn't post. It was: What falls into the 'Flag this tabblo as "may offend"' catagory?
Ned said at 7:27 a.m. on Jun 20, 2007:
There are no hard and fast guidelines for what "may offend". If you see a tabblo, and think it will turn people away from the site, for whatever reason, you should click the link.

That will bring the tabblo to our attention, and we will decide how to handle the situation. Often, we do nothing: you'd be surprised how many pictures of cats and babies get flagged as "may offend", probably as a joke!

Thanks for your vigilance!
AliDar said at 2:18 p.m. on Jun 20, 2007:
Yes, I can understand that it would be very difficult to set guideline for such, and with such a diverse community there would be many reasons why someone might click the 'may offend’ button; making a joke, or childish vindictiveness being a couple of the reasons why, and I'm sorry to hear that that happens so frequently.
I guess I was sort of hoping that by posting a topic here that I could avoid having to click on the ‘may offend’ button myself. I hate feeling like a whistle blower, but I do like the ‘feel’ of Tabblo’s community the way it is now. I wouldn’t want to see it change into an adults only, ‘meet and greet and share sexy pictures of myself’ kind of place, … so I clicked on the ‘may offend button, even though I didn’t much like the feeling I got from doing it.

Thanks Ned, for responding to this so quickly.

I found the article at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2138949,00.asp describe some of the plans that HP has for Tabblo. I think this is very cool and I hope at one point HP opens the plugins up to other web sites, including the "small joe" sites (like a "lite" version that is free.

My only concern: Unless they are willing to throw some dollars (as in people) into the Tabblo team, this site will suffer ...

Mixing User Name and Real Name created by Zero42 on May 10, 2007:
Zero42 said at 10:39 p.m. on May 10, 2007:
I find the mixing of user name and real name confusing to keep up with. In the message section at the top of my main page it shows people's real name, then when I open my message center it only shows their user name. User name is used almost everywhere: comments, tabblos in general, etc. so it's the one I recognize the most, but when I want to share a Tabblo I have to remember what people's real name is, what their avatar looks like, or I end up going to their pages to find out. I don't know if other people are having the same problem. I guess it gets worse the more people you have in your circle, but personally I'd find it much easier if the real name was just kept on the main page. Are there reasons I'm missing that the real name is used in these places?
Dunster said at 11:26 a.m. on May 11, 2007:
There are historical reasons why this is true, but they weren't intentional. It just happened that way. I'm pretty certain you know what I'm referring to and I don't think the details belong here in public. I'm jittery about having all of my 'secure' images unprotected and I've been wondering if Tabblo has interest in fixing this issue, if there's a plan/date set to resolve it, or if it's going to remain this way?

Can you tell me more about winks? I never understood it fully.

What is the purpose? How does one know when you left them one?

I tried it out today on a few to see what happens but I didn't see anything on my end (per se..it does turn red)...what does the other party see after I have "winked"??

Is the wink like a thumbs-up thing? Does it help boost their tabblo so they make it someplace where they get featured?

Sorry I didn't understand this, but I rather ask then miss something fun on Tabblo :)
Ned said at 4:08 p.m. on Apr 24, 2007:
Winks are just a way to say that you like a tabblo. They help decide things like the popular and featured lists. They are not visible, in that you can't see how many winks you've gotten, but you can see their effect when your tabblo ends up in the popular list.
Thebeautifullife said at 4:54 p.m. on Apr 24, 2007:
Okay..thanks a lot, Ned. Got it finally! :)
Purpletiger said at 7:39 a.m. on May 9, 2007:
So maybe it's just me, but it seems that if people don't really know what the winks are for or what they do, then it doesn't really warrant winks being used as the determining factor in what makes tabblos most popular.

Comments About Comments created by Zero42 on Apr 18, 2007:

I think it would be nice to have the option to reply to individual comments. (As well as keeping the existing ability to reply to all.) Does anyone else have an opinion on it?

Also, is it visible anywhere to the creator of a Tabblo to see who has signed up for comments? Myself and (I've seen) others sometimes use the message system to reply to comments instead of the given comment system, because it's not visible who has signed up to receive comments and you just don't know if the person you're replying to is going to receive it. At least, I can't find it anywhere.
Thebeautifullife said at 9:37 p.m. on Apr 18, 2007:
Zero42, what do you mean? When someone comments on your Tabblo, you can hit on their "id" and reply to them OR just reply to them (direct it to them in your reply) by using the comments box yourself. I usually do both. (copy and paste--copy what I wrote, paste them an email on their page..where it says: leave me a messaGE).

So...just so I understand you, can you verify if that is what you mean?

Thanks!
Zero42 said at 1:17 p.m. on Apr 19, 2007:
I like the ability to reply to all, but it's a shot in the dark if you don't know who, out of those that commented, has signed up to receive more comments. Say I visit one of your Tabblo's and I leave a comment, but in it I don't ask a question and I don't expect you to reply to me specifically, so I don't check the option for "Email me when others leave a comment on this tabblo." Later, you read your comments and reply to what I said somehow specifying in your one comment that a certain section of it is intended for me to read, but of course I'll never know unless you also took the time to click my id, click 'Send a message to', and then retype it there, or copy paste whatever applicable part. If we had the ability to reply to individual comments these extra steps wouldn't have to be taken, there wouldn't be a chance that your intended communication wouldn't be received, and it would generally promote communication.
Dunster said at 4:31 p.m. on Apr 19, 2007:
There are a few competing interests. As a website, we like it when our members connect and communicate. It helps us build a strong community.

At the same time, it's important to let people control what appears in their inbox. If they get email that they don't think is relevant, or even worse, can't stop, then they become frustrated and quit the site altogether.

We've set it up such that if a member comments, the default is that the person is signed up for all future communication on the tabblo. But the member can choose to change that default. The member can also change the setting for individual tabblos.

Then there is the user-to-user feature, which is of course quite different. It's the way for you to reach out to someone.

I tend to think of commenting as a "pull" communication. If I want it, I can "pull" the information off the site. User-to-user is more of a "push" where one user "pushes" to the second.

Maybe we can find a way to selectively push comments in special cases. When we did, we'd have to be very careful. We wouldn't want people to stop commenting because it unleashes a torrent of unwanted (to them) email.
Zero42 said at 4:54 p.m. on Apr 19, 2007:
a reply to an individual comment could be sent to the message center (maybe a new folder in the list).
Zero42 said at 7:10 p.m. on Apr 29, 2007:
in place of or in addition to the current option of having every comment made by anyone pushed to my email system, how about: "Email me when the author leaves a comment on this tabblo."? ..or simply an option that all replies made by authors to tabblo's that i've commented on be sent to my message center? let me know if i'm beating a dead horse. if i'm the only one not wanting so much email, i'll shut up about it.

But, if you "share" an image with someone it makes a tabblo??? How odd!! Why do they make it do that???
Dunster said at 3:21 p.m. on Apr 17, 2007:
Zero is right on.

Also, you can go to your account page (http://www.tabblo.com/studio/account/) and configure an email source. Then you can email photos in to Tabblo. They get immediately published. The subject line of the email will be the tabblo title.

That's often what Antonio does. While he's traveling he'll take a picture with his cellphone and send it in.

It's still very much a work in progress. There's not too much that I can share; perhaps Antonio will have some ideas that he can make public.

I won't leave you empty-handed, though. The New York Times story from last week is very, very good. It's thin on the details, but it gives an excellent high-level view of HP's strategy for print and Tabblo: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/09/technology/09print.html

A wider exposure created by DVP on Apr 10, 2007:
DVP said at 8:03 p.m. on Apr 10, 2007:
A few months ago Tabblo went from a ratings system to a wink system and was diligently working on improving the new user's experience by allowing them to view popular tabblos.
As a social experiment this has proved very interesting. A recent comment made on a rather controversial tabblo implied that certain users were determined to 'socially dominate' the community that has been established in Tabblo. Certainly some of us are prolific because we're enthusiastic...

What would happen if Tabblo limited the number of tabblos a user could have appear in the 'popular' tabblos section?

IF there was only one of your tabblos on the popular page at a time, would you feel less validated? Would it provide wider exposure for the less prolific users? Would it encourage more shy users to make their tabblo's public? Would it have any merit as a social or community experience?

I invite your feedback. There are a lot of deep thinkers who 'inhabit' Tabblo. I look forward to hearing from them. :)
Joaqy said at 8:40 p.m. on Apr 10, 2007:
To me, it doesn't matter if mine landed in the 'popular' section or not. Great if it did, no love lost if it didn't. My images are mine to appreciate even if the community accepts it or not. I post because I enjoy the experience, it's FUN to do and I can easily share events/stories with friends. That's my objective.
Dunster said at 10:40 a.m. on Apr 11, 2007:
We do tweak the featured and popular formulas periodically. It's a great question and I'm curious what others think.
LatentE said at 8:06 a.m. on Apr 12, 2007:
I think a simpler approach to the "popular" section could be taken. Set up a member tag for other members - "Hide popular". Similar to the tag for member photos. Then use that tag to filter the "popular" section. That way even if Ansel Adams is posting every day some members might get tired of beautiful majestic landscapes and want to see what quality tabblos other members have created.

This would involve tag processing for the popular section and allowing for a larger pool of tabblos than are displayed. But the methods involved seem to be the same as individual photo tag filter handling. Of course the "hide popular" tag could be switched on and off. I'd guess this tag handling could go in a member's "notification" page or it could be handled directly in the "popular" page with icon markers as in a member's photo page. Clicking on a displayed "popular" tabblo's "hide" icon would hide that member's "popular" tabblos and allow for other member's tabblos to be displayed. Another, more general icon could allow for the display of "hidden" tabblos and unselecting the "hide" option.

Photo tag filtering seems to be transient, requiring resetting each time the photo page is entered. Notification page values are not transient and don't clear on their own. I don't know how significant these differences are in terms of implementing a "hide popular" tag.

Whatever one's thoughts are about the significance of the popular page, that section and the "Tabblo of the day" are the only ways, other than general tabblo page scanning and clique oriented "social networking," that encourage other members to view and give feedback on a member's efforts. They are the front page of Tabblo and the longer and closer a tabblo is to the front page the more chance it will receive feedback and new fresh "unfiltered" and unprompted feedback.
AdSR said at 12:51 p.m. on Apr 12, 2007:
One good way of equalizing exposure could be having a "random tabblos" section in the community pages (or maybe random tabblo instead of tabblo of the day). It could be tweaked for probability or not, but the general idea is that when it's random, harder-to-reach tabblos get the same chance as new, popular, often-favorited ones.
Zero42 said at 7:47 p.m. on Apr 16, 2007:
I think one mention per user is enough, but I'm a little skeptic of having a publicly visible rating system. Think of how the site would be if the ratings were only internally used and only displayed to the user about their own creations. I have to admit that by default when I see a member list, I think of the people on it differently if they are in an order. I assume that others may have this tendency. Knowing the hierarchy doesn't stop me, but it deters me, or guides me away from being likely to click on things I wouldn't otherwise. Maybe rank lists randomly, but slightly weighted; say, every 3rd image is random and the rest are ranked?

I'm going to tangent slightly, but this is on the topic of exposure: It seems that everyone uses 'groups' like categories, but I think if a browsable category system were in place, groups would be used for more specific purposes, and exposure would be enhanced all over. There would be a front page (similar to the current group page) hosting the most popular images in that category (based on rating), a section for the featured, the most recent, etc. The key difference to categories would be that they are predefined. They would appear as a 'finish' option just like groups.

Personally, I didn't know what the *wink* was about.

Is there any way to create a horizontal poster. For example 16 x 36 where 36 is the width. Commonly called "landscape mode". I don't see any feature to allow us to set the poster to horizontal mode.
Dunster said at 10:43 a.m. on Apr 11, 2007:
We don't have a landscape poster option at this time. If you just have images you can just lay them out sideways - but the text can't be sideways. Landscape posters are on the feature list somewhere, but not built yet.
Allinnawa said at 2:32 p.m. on Jun 6, 2007:
I want to do the same thing. A 17" x 11" poster rather than a 11" x 17". What I don't understand is that a few months ago I was able to make one, and now I can't. Why have you removed the functionality?
Dunster said at 4:38 p.m. on Jun 6, 2007:
Here's a way to make a landscape poster: create your tabblo as an online tabblo. Then, on your online tabblo, click "purchase." It will give you the option to purchase your online tabblo as a poster, and in that poster-preview mode you can convert it to landscape.

As for "why," it's a bit complicated. We're always updating the site to launch new products or re-do sections that we've learned how to implement better. Think of it like a long road - you don't rebuild the whole road at once, you do it section by section. Sometimes when you re-do one section, it doesn't quite match the adjacent section, until you go back and re-do that one too. In this case we re-did the "make" and "make book" process, but haven't yet re-done the "make poster" process.

I even own an HP computer but am skeptical that they can do for us as a community what Tabblo is doing.

I like the Tabblo brand and not-so secretly am a bit sad that this might be diluted by just another megalithic company. While an entrepreneur myself I understand the build it and sell it model, but for some reason had thought that Tabblo was in this for the long-haul. I guess we'll wait and see.

Yes, my only concern would be that you no longer face Tabblo faces there with you (via internet) but corporate HP'ers...and everything getting so big that it takes the personal touch out of it...and that is what appealed to me....it was not just the winking Tabblo character, but that there were real winking smiley faces there...contactable and communicating like family. SW Airlines is much smaller than say United Airlines, but so much better (to me): price, casual style, they feed you breakfast before the flight in the morning, friendly down-to-earth (not corporate in speech) flight attendants, etc. Sometimes smaller is better. Sometimes.

Eddie said at 12:45 a.m. on Mar 16, 2007:
Hi there,

In the old book editor, the pages in the "trough" below the 2-up display were always 'live' -- that is, you could drag and drop photos between those mini-pages and up to the main pages you were editing, and vice versa.

That editor is really powerful, but on some browsers causes a serious performance problem.

To fix the problem, our book editor now defaults to a "trough" filled with page thumbnails -- they are not 'live' in the sense that they are not draggable, droppable photo holders. That book editor change causes a very dramatic performance improvement on some browsers.

But because some browsers can perform quite well using the 'live' pages, particularly Firefox 2.0 and IE7, for people using those browsers, we cause an account option to be displayed that lets you select whether you want to use the 'live' page editor. That selection can be made right in the book editor, by clicking the 'Enable live pages' link that appears just above the book editor 'trough'.

Hope this helps,

Eddie

Life poster created by Iljas on Feb 14, 2007:
Iljas said at 11:44 a.m. on Feb 14, 2007:
Hello
I'm new here and what I'm trying to do is a so-called "life poster". It is a kind of poster with a lot (about 80) small pictures on it. I select big size 16x36, then "interlocking" layout. The problem is that by default wizard puts about 8 pictures on it. I tried to add pictures manually and then resize them (setting smaller snap grid). This seems to be nightmare because resize tool is not keep aspect ratio and looks like does not snap to smaller grids. Plus for some reason only "swap" and "manual" layout modes available.
Is it possible to add bunch of pictures at once to poster and let system automatically arrange them? Or maybe any other tips on creating such a poster?
Thanks in advance.

More on Flickr integration created by Dave.delay on Feb 13, 2007:
Dave.delay said at 7:35 p.m. on Feb 13, 2007:
I have used Flickr integration to pull several photos to Tabblo. These photos are used in many of my existing tabblos. As noted elsewhere in this forum, Flickr is asking all of their members to switch to a Yahoo! ID by March 15. When I do this, Flickr integration will stop working. If I attempt to correct this by reseting my Flikcr credentials, Tabblo will remove all the photos that were previously pulled from Flickr.

I'm not sure why removing photos is necessary. Is it a technical necessity? Is it a contractual arrangement with Flickr? I'm curious about that, but I'm even more concerned about what I, the faithful Tabblo user, should do. I see three choices:

1) Live with it. Just keep using my existing Tabblo account and forget about Flickr integration.

2) Abandon my existing Tabblo account and create a new one that integrates with my new Flickr account. That way my old tabblos will live on and I can still integrate with Flickr.

3) Hope that Tabblo sees that neither of the above is desirable. Is there any hope of Tabblo solving this problem? It doesn't have to be solved before March 15, but I'd really like to keep my existing Flickr photos and integrate with my new Flickr account.

Thanks.
Antonio said at 8:44 a.m. on Feb 14, 2007:
Dave,

I've been thinking a lot as to what the best solution is to this situation. The thing that is clear is that when you merge your ID to the Yahoo one, all of your Tabblo/Flickr integration credentials will be blown away. Right now that means you would have to re-integrate which means you'd lose all of your pictures (even if they are already placed in tabblos).

This last problem is what we're hoping to fix with a better re-integration plan. I will post to this thread as soon we know how to work around the issue. In the meantime, I imagine complaining to Yahoo will have little impact.
Cruising said at 9:07 a.m. on Feb 14, 2007:
It sounds that: Pictures pulled from Flickr are actually not stored on a Tabblo server - they are re-pulled every time the Tabblo is displayed.

Otherwise, couldn't you just keep (cache) the picture you pulled and not worry about Flickr changing (more like "import" vs integrate?

I actually thought this is what you were doing all along. That is the only reason I ask.
Dave.delay said at 9:48 a.m. on Feb 14, 2007:
@Antonio, thanks very much. I'll stay tuned.

@Cruising, it is my understanding that Flickr photos are copied to Tabblo servers. But maybe I'm wrong about that.
JeroldsSis said at 5:56 p.m. on Mar 3, 2007:
Do you use Picasa photo editor at all? It may be an option for you. You can download it for free and then you can upload to Tabblo directly from Picasa. That's what I use and it's so simple. Just and idea.
Dave.delay said at 11:36 a.m. on Mar 4, 2007:
Thanks for the suggestion, but I've started using Tabblo's own Java uploader. That seems to be working fine.

Even more to the point however, this whole thing may a false alarm. This morning, I switched my Flickr account over to a new Yahoo! ID. I then tested Flickr integration on Tabblo and it continued to work fine. I was able to see all my Flickr sets without making any changes on the Tabblo side.

Perhaps this is one less problem for the busy Tabblo team to worry about?
Antonio said at 5:55 p.m. on Mar 12, 2007:
Yes, it would seem that this has been corrected (if it was every an issue). I just merged down two of my test accounts and the process went completely smoothly.

LatentE said at 9:27 a.m. on Feb 13, 2007:
I don't mean to disillusion anyone but, because of the manner of image display used - with on the fly resizing - if your image can be viewed it can be downloaded - in full size. If this is a concern to you, my advice is to make sure your images are only slightly bigger than the tabblo view size. That way any downloads wouldn't be much better than the "temp" download the browser does to allow viewing. Looking at one of your images I notice that you seem to be doing that already. You can also put a signature within the image, tagging it. I think copyright is a default but you can put a copyright symbol in the image too if you like.

LatentE said at 8:11 a.m. on Feb 9, 2007:
Thanks for the quick reply.

There's a problem, at least for me, with commenting in tabblos where people might be using "stock" images. I now find myself looking at superb tabblos and wondering if the member actually took the photos or I was looking at some grabs from somewhere on the web. I can simply ignore members that I haven't seen a wide enough range of tabblos from but that would leave out encouraging new members and people new to photography that show an interest. Definitely a two sided issue, it's just that I feel pretty stupid complimenting someone on an Ansel Adams like image that was a stock photo.

Very cool and useful.

I like the feature, but I think it needs to be more dynamic. Mine always goes to "Fans of rAngOLi !", and that's cool, but I'd like it to go to some selected/daily or even some random favorite.

I currenly use it to find new favorites that I may have missed. I do this by starting from the "browse by favorites" link and then click on the "fans" of their favorites and their fans and so on. Sortof like "six degrees of Kevin Bacon"...

In any case, a new/different starting point, rather than a static one would open up a lot more new/interesting favorites.
DVP said at 9:43 p.m. on Feb 7, 2007:
Hi Jeff, you can do this with any starting tabblo you like. I'm pretty sure Antonio's link was just a suggestion. My random starting point is tabblo of the day and usually there's lots of user's favorites to surf from there.

Changing the way Flickr and Tabblo integrate created by Antonio on Feb 3, 2007:
Antonio said at 7:37 a.m. on Feb 3, 2007:
Hi Flickr users,

As of last night, we no longer bring over all of your Flickr photos whether you are going to them at Tabblo or not. Instead, when you are making a tabblo (or card, book, poster, etc.), you can source pictures from any of your existing Flickr photosets. We'll then bring over images at about 640x480 size (plenty of resolution to use for online product creation) right then and there. That way you can get started right away. Then, if and when you buy something that requires higher-res images, we'll pull them over after your purchase is complete to ensure you get the very best looking product we can make.

Why are we making this change? Two reasons:

1. Flickr asked us to back in November (thanks for being patient Flickr!)
2. You asked us to eliminate the pause between account integration and your Flickr photos appearing on Tabblo (sometimes up to six hours).

For now, you will have to work off of your photosets to create Tabblo products. If there is enough interest, we may implement individual photo selection for those of you that don't use the photoset feature.

Finally, "publish tabblo to Flickr" remains unchanged (and wait for some new formats coming down the road for this).

As always, please provide any/all feedback below.
Cruising said at 9:09 a.m. on Feb 3, 2007:
This sounds like an improved work flow.

I actually don't have a flickr account. Why would someone use both flickr and Tabblo? (I'm being sincere with the question). Does flickr compliment Tabblo?
Antonio said at 9:16 a.m. on Feb 3, 2007:
There are a few reasons but by far the biggest one seems to be that some Flickr users have already uploaded tons of stuff to Flickr and avoiding the double upload (plus organization) was a huge benefit that we could bring to Flickr users. I wish that Shutterfly, Ofoto, and Snapfish to name a few big players were as forward-looking as Flickr is actually letting the user "own" his own data.
Katkee said at 10:47 a.m. on Feb 3, 2007:

thanks for info, and i like the great tabblo / flickr partnership, i have great fun peeps over on flickr as well as here, the sites definitely complement each other. :)
Craige said at 2:26 p.m. on Feb 3, 2007:
As a tried and true flickr user, I can say that the reason I am interested in using both sites is because often I just use flickr for throwing a bunch of shots out there. But for a tabblo I put more thought into arranging the photos. It takes longer to create a tabblo, but I can quickly share a flickr set as soon as it has been uploaded. That's how it works for me anyway.
Moucri said at 1:09 a.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
In response to Cruising's question about why someone would use both Flickr and Tabblo (and pretty much echoing what Craige has said)…

I like using both sites because they offer different ways of sharing photography. Flickr is great for uploading mass amounts of photos and viewing them individually. While you can create "sets" of photos there, you don't get the same experience as Tabblo (with building a layout with multiple photos and text).

Keepps said at 8:43 a.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
Interesting...but how do I do it? When I click on the "use Flickr" option, I get a page about creating events.....I'm already "integrated" with Flickr, but can't seem to make contact!
Antonio said at 8:49 a.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
Hm, it doesn't seem like you are integrated from what you are describing. Why don't you try re-integrating by going here and let us know how that goes.
Megaptera said at 2:38 p.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
Two thoughts:
1) Problem linking with flickr:
I can't find a "Use flickr" link either. I can only find the initial permission page and it sounds ominous...like the two sets I have already loaded are going to be deleted or something.
this is what I get:
"Once you finish the integration process (giving Tabblo permission to see your Flickr photos), you will see a link to "Use Flickr" in your photo organizer that will let you use your photosets directly."

2) Why use flickr and tabloo:
I joined flickr 3+ years ago (as a refuge from fotolog) when it was about the same size Tabloo is now (so it seemed) it was an intimate place, with a very responsive staff... now it is humongous and I don't enjoy it nearly as much. But I am very interested in environmental education (whales and seals my main focus) and it is a great place to teach and learn about issues like global warming etc.... nothing like pictures to express what is going on.

But I am a story teller .... wanting to bring together the photos and stories about encounters I have had with whales and seals and tabloo seems a wonderful set up to do this. I just need to fumble around a bit to understand how.
Cruising said at 2:43 p.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
@Megaptera... if you have linked to Flikr, when you go to the Lighttable to select the photos. It's where you can choose by date, by tabblo or by tag, and you have your pic thumbnails on top, and the empty space on the bottom to drag photos too...

On that screen - right under the "title" above the lightbox, I see:

Add photos to your tabblo
Choose photos from your library below or use flickr

If I click on use flickr - it appears to use the link I setup.

Hope this helps.
Megaptera said at 3:16 p.m. on Feb 4, 2007:

Thanks for the help. I had integrated with Flickr, and created several tabblos, and then read a notice from Flickr that I should create a Yahoo account, and merge my old Flickr account with the new Yahoo id, which I did, and that seemed to be what had blocked my Tabblo access to the Flickr photos (created with the older Flickr id)....got it sorted now, thanks.
Antonio said at 4:04 p.m. on Feb 4, 2007:
Wow, this is no good (on Yahoo's part). What this means for Tabblo is that 100% of the accounts that have integrated will be "bad" after they cut over on 3/15. We're going to have to come up with a work-around from our end or lots of tabbloers will lose a whole bunch of work they've already done.

What a bummer— thanks for letting us know.
Frankenstein said at 11:40 p.m. on Feb 7, 2007:
Yeah, Flickr and Tabblo are good at different things. Flickr's very good at sharing individual photos, and Tabblo is really good at sharing large groups of photos. Make sense?
Dave.delay said at 5:18 p.m. on Feb 12, 2007:
Antonio,

I also need to switch from my "old school" Flickr account to a Yahoo account before 3/15. When I do that, I assume I will have to futz with Tabblo's Flickr integration settings, but what do you mean by "tabbloers will lose a whole bunch of work"? Do you mean pictures will disappear from existing tabblos?

Thanks for any details you have.

Image in limbo created by LatentE on Jan 24, 2007:
LatentE said at 7:02 p.m. on Jan 24, 2007:
I've got a couple of points I want to bring up. I don't know if this is the right forum but it seems the simplest to post to.

I just made a tabblo. I thought I had uploaded all the images I wanted to use using the java uploader. On making the tabblo I noticed that I had somehow missed one of the images. I'm not sure if I did or there was a problem in the upload.

There was a problem that I remember in the screen that fills the photo box for the tabblo being built. I transferred all the images but one of them wouldn't display. A space was left in the lower (photo box) part of the screen but there was no visible image. If I tried to transfer the image again from the upper screen area I'd get a message that the image is already there. Unfortunately I wasn't doing any of this thinking in terms of debugging and so I didn't take note of which image was the one with the problem.

When I realized that the tabblo I was building didn't have one of the images I wanted to use I then did an upload of it from within the tabblo building screen. "Upload another photo" I think it was called. This inserts the uploaded image directly into the tabblo at the bottom without going through any other screens. This turned out to be the image that seems to be in some sort of limbo.

To the point - I've got an image in my newest tabblo that does not appear in "My photos." It's in the tabblo but not in "My photos."

Also, when building a tabblo, sometimes I like to overlap images somewhat. The problem I have is that there doesn't seem to be any way to select which image is on top in an overlap. Sometimes I'm lucky and with the overlap move the image I want is on top. Other times, no. Ironically the overlapping image in an image pair sometimes changes, seemingly at random. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a way to specify the overlap between two images?

The tabblo is "Colors of Music." The image with the problem is the one with the heavily blurred waving hand and stack of playing cards on the shirt.

This was all done in Firefox 2.0.
LatentE said at 8:57 p.m. on Jan 24, 2007:
I see the problem .. or rather the mistake I made. I had already uploaded that image some time before and I guess your processing checks for equivalent images and blocks dups. I resized the other images that had already been uploaded and so they must have been handled as different images.

I guess that just leaves the question of handling overlapping images in a tabblo.

Unfortunately, we haven't built a way to convert one book type to another. It's something that we plan on doing, but it's a feature that hasn't been built yet. (It's actually harder to do than it looks - the pages are different aspect ratios, and the text blocks are different. You can't just make everything twice as big).

Thanks for the feedback - we'll work on it.

Hi, On 12/29 I spent all day and I do mean all day, creating a large bvook. My neice and I saved the book to finish at a later time. I reviewed it several days later and I went to look at it just now and everything in the book is gone except the empty book that says My latest tabblo

ShellieG1's Tabblo
Dec 29, 2006
9.5 x 8 photo book

This tabblo is not yet finished

Please help retrieve the images or give me a clue as to what happened. I absolutely did not delete the book.

More to come on this in a Tabblo.

Where can I access the new font? created by Cruising on Jan 15, 2007:
Cruising said at 11:49 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
I saw some pretty cool fonts used in headings ... for example in this tabblo.

I couldn't find this anywhere. (the script type font in the title). Any specifics would be appreciated.
Ned said at 6:46 a.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
We currently don't allow control over the font in the title. The theme controls the font used in the title, and a few themes use different fonts on the Mac and PC. The script font you are talking about is Zapfino, which is a Mac only font. On the PC (and in printed products), you see Georgia Italic instead.
Cruising said at 10:18 a.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
So which theme has this font as the title?
Ned said at 10:25 a.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
Sorry, I meant to include that! A few of them do: Vendome, Pinkie, Moody (which is the one used in your example), and Chavez Ravine.

I think I asked this before, not sure, but will we ever be able to use different fonts in the heading?

Will Tabblo remain free? created by Ballantyne on Jan 15, 2007:
Ballantyne said at 3:56 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
When I signed up for Tabblo I recall that there was something of a promise to offer the site for free until the end of the year (2006). After that the staff would decide whether the income was enough to provide the service for free in the future.

Well, here we all are zooming through 2007. Is the free service working?

There are advantages to free sites that might make using them of greater value than just the low cost. I talk about it here: http://howesound.wordpress.com/2006/12/21/how-long-will-material-posted-at-wordpresscom-and-flick...
Antonio said at 5:55 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
Ballantyne rest assured— we have no plans at Tabblo to make you start paying for the service that you currently get for free. I would encourage you (and everyone else) to ocassionally buy some of our cool products if you'd like to support the cause.

But we are not going to bait-and-switch you as is so common out there on the web. You heard it here first and you are welcome to quote me on that.

Ratings created by Roygoodwin on Jan 14, 2007:
Roygoodwin said at 1:43 a.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Any thinking around letting people choose whether they want their tabblos rated?
JeffS said at 9:02 a.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
I was thinking the same thing. In general, I like the ratings, but some users apparently don't (I've seen requests NOT to rate the tabblo -- even though it was really good). I'd suggest two things: 1) make the "rate me" selectable per tabblo, or possibly per user 2) add a "photo critique" group where users can add a tabblo that they would like to have rated (but limit the number of tabblos in the group or whatever).

I have some olde tabblos of my own that I might like to get rated (so I could add them to the photo critique); but I also have some family/friend ones that I would not want rated (so I could set that on those tabblos).

I would also visit the photo critique group often, since I'd expect some of those to be the best tabblos.
Roygoodwin said at 4:06 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Just a quick note to share some of my own thinking about ratings....in order to be clear.

Personally - I don't like the explicit rating idea at all unless it is an optional activitiy.

I think that explicit ratiings as implemented here, go against the idea of community. I think it erodes the sense of community.

Additionally, anonymous ratings can tend to bring out the 'crank' factor.

Lastly, I find myself in agreement with another tabblo'er that said (I am paraphrasing here..) for him it as about making and sharing images, not collecting gold stars..that person asked for his tabblos not to be rated... at least one was anyway.. and unlike comments - them little stars are durn sticky...
Cruising said at 4:23 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
+1 (geek for I agree)
Antonio said at 8:11 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Guys,

Just so you know, ratings have been hotly debated inside and outside of Tabblo for a long time. We could have done them last year but didn't because we couldn't get our heads around some of the key issues. What we were thinking of doing next was implementing an "opt-out" on a per user basis so that as a user you could choose not to have your tabblos rated. But it doesn't sound like this would address some of the issues that JeffS raises above.

I really like the suggestion of having "rate zones" where your tabblos would be submitted for explicit ratings. There is actually no reason why we couldn't currently do this with a group right now— and the result would still be a stream of tabblos that were rated to be at the top of the heap for new users to navigate. One key question is: how would new folks know that this group/area existed?

The other alternative: allow me to explicitly declare some tabblos as "rateable" worries me from a consistency perspective.

Here is one question I have for you all: are any of you turned "off" by the ratings as they are implemented now? Do you suddenly feel that the community is somehow less friendly and accepting? Please chime in below...
Cruising said at 8:35 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
I don't think it's a matter of less friendly or less accepting.

I think it is rare that you have built a community that, although extremely diverse, it is very accepting and supportive. This is NOT the norm on most other communities.

Rating introduces a concept of judging that may make some uncomfortable. Personally, I love to give positive rating - but not at the risk of having someone feel "left out".
Roygoodwin said at 9:02 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Re: Cruising's response - +1 :-)

Re: worrying about consistency - I don't understand the worry. Some people will choose to have their tabblo's rated. Some will not. Some people join the night photography group. Some do not. Some people make posters and books. Some do not. There are lots of choices on tabblo. Lots. It seems like letting folks choose has worked so far.

Re: Turn offs. My turn off is that cognitive dissonance arrising from the concept of a "competitive community". flickr uses a different approach to the 'star system'. They use some background analytics to come up with what they call interestingness, based on comments, favoriteness, clickthroughs etc...

Bottom Line: Y'all have to do what is best for tabblo. If you think that ratings will help you monetize this situation in a way that I am not privy to - then obviously you have to go for it.
Antonio said at 10:56 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Ok good feedback all around.

@best for tabblo: ratings was/is meant for two things: 1. helping new users navigate some of the "best" content easily (and note that we have a "featured" algorithm that is potentially even more multi-variable that flickr's interestingness if only because we have more metadata to mine), and 2. to reward the types of users who would be motivated by the opportunity to have their work rated. I see that we've talked a bit about the downside of #2 on this thread, but what do you guys think about the potential advantages to the navigability of the site as more stuff gets rated up?
Cruising said at 11:23 p.m. on Jan 14, 2007:
Yes - Antonio - I think that would be helpful. But that raises the question - are traffic and referrals more reflective of higher value content - as opposed to rating.

If something is rated 5 stars, but another Tabblo either not rated, or rated as 3 stars, gets 3 times the traffic and referrals, which really is more popular?

Personally, I would be interested in the higher traffic first.
JeffS said at 8:04 a.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
Just a couple of quick comments on the above. While opt-out on a per-tabblo basis might be the most flexible; I think opt-out on a user basis would be fine. Any tabblo that was "private" would essentially be opted-out. I would be happy with that solution (even though I would not opt-out myself).

Re: highly viewed vs. highly rated... I think the rating system could help find that "hidden gem" that you might overlook otherwise. I like the ability to look at the top-rated ones, and the featured ones and the most popular ones. I'm likely to find something interesting in one of those places...
Roygoodwin said at 3:49 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
Here's another thing to consider as you think about things like community and user experience.

A person joined the tabblo community today Jan 15th. They posted a tabblo, their very first tabblo. They got 2 '1 star' ratings.

Not exactly the warm welcome they were expecting I'll wager..more like "Welcome - and try to do better next time."

I've said more than enough now. You guys will figure this out. This'll be the last posting I do on this topic.

Best wishes -
DVP said at 3:50 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
I'd like to address point number 2 from Antonio's last post. Isn't having comments the same as having ratings? People have the opportunity to make thier feedback much more dynamic with a comment than a simple 'star' rating system. How do you reflect good storytelling vs. nice lighting with a star? I think it's limiting. Then again, if you can't think of anything constructive or unique to say, I guess a simple star is just fine.

Here's another thought I had... ratings drives traffic to newer tabblos, but some of the content that's older deserves an eye too.Who's going to go back to the really good tabblos that were made a few months ago and rate them? If as you say in point 1 it was meant to help new viewers see more 'good' content, wouldn't just a random selections of tabblos that had the most comments/views be the way to do it?

Personally, I can see why the ratings are contentious. It does feel a little like more of a popularity contest than anything. If I don't get rated than I have less chance of exposure to users? Not sure I'm on the bandwagon...
If I want to see what people like, I simply surf their FAVORITES. That tells me what's highest rated for that person and it tells me a bit more and what their personal tastes are like.
JeroldsSis said at 4:00 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
I agree 100% with DVP. I don't need ratings and I won't rate. I would rather leave a comment as it's more personal that way and you get to know others. I'm fine without ratings.
Antonio said at 5:57 p.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
These are all thoughtful responses and we really appreciate them. Does anyone who is reading this actually have anything positive to say about ratings? Anyone? Bueller?
Superdewa said at 12:53 a.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
I don't love them. I now feel pressure when I am viewing a tabblo to rate it in my mind, and I don't like that.
Chingyo said at 8:22 p.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
Well, I can't contribute a positive vote for ratings... but I will give my support for an opt-out system - which I hope you'll implement *soon* (nudge, nudge). I'm with JeroldSis in that comments are much more meaningful, and interesting. Please, please give us opt out on a user basis.

Also, if theres a way I could get credit for linking people to this site, that would be great.(saw that the points program expired, but its still posted.) Heres my blog http://blog.myspace.com/vinyltreez any help would be appriciated
Dunster said at 1:14 p.m. on Jan 10, 2007:
Doing an auto-post type integration to MySpace is a good idea. I'll include it in our "feature request" planning.

One option in the interim might be the "get html" link you see on the "share" page. That HTML is pretty generic and can be pasted into a log of locations.

As for credit: when you use the "get html" code, we use a special link that is unique to your tabblo. When you use that link, AND the person registers with Tabblo, then you get the Tabblo Points credit. (The more common Tabblo Point method is when you invite someone using the Tabblo invite system. The get-HTML-click-and-register is the less common method).

We're planning on updating the Tabblo points feature and the information around it pretty soon.

Rating... created by Cruising on Jan 9, 2007:
Cruising said at 9:20 a.m. on Jan 9, 2007:
Cool Rating - and I can understand the controversy.

One usability suggestion. Duplicate the rating to the bottom of the Tabblo. Since you should rate a Tabblo "after" viewing it, you are already at the bottom, possibly adding a comment.

To rate, you have to scroll all the way to top.

Also - would love to be able to view the ratings in the "My Tabblo's" view (or all views for that matter).

Thanks as always for the improvements.

What exactly is the picture/text that will be on the "front" cover? Is it just a wrapper of some sort - or is it the actual book cover?

The reason I was asking. If it's a wrapper, does it make sense to repeat that picture as the first page, in case the wrap is lost or soiled?

Thanks.
Dunster said at 2:10 p.m. on Dec 30, 2006:
Check out some of the photos here: http://www.tabblo.com/studio/productinfo/book

The big book, you can choose a front and back cover photo. The photo is actually part of the book cover.

The small book, there is a cover "sleeve" that slips around the book. It's certainly possible that you could use the sleeve.

Repeating the photo is really just a matter of taste.
DVP said at 1:45 p.m. on Jan 16, 2007:
The mini book cover wraps around vertically (top and bottom) of the book as opposed to horizontally which is what I've seen in the past. It's a snug fit around the books, so I would definately include the photo inside. The outer wrapper is a nice heavy weight slightly glossy cardstock and it feels quite rich.

I haven't seen the big books yet. All in time. :)

Just curious, as my book has personal options which I would like to edit out before sharing it online. Can we make variations of our books?
JeffS said at 4:10 p.m. on Dec 15, 2006:
I wondered that myself. I added some pages and edits after I ordered a book. I was hoping that the latest version (as of printing) would get picked up.

It's possible that the PDF file is generated at the time of order and that would be a "snapshot" that would not change.

Love the new layouts you made for the holiday.

Any chance you can leave the Halloween ones up in case we could use them for other needs?

Also - on the My Tabblos page, I see you "merged" the purchased Tabblos with the normal list. Personally (so take it with a grain of salt), I liked them on the bottom. That way I could go straight to a work in progress that I know is for a poster or a book.

Not a big deal - just some feedback.

Also - the system seems to be flying the past 2 days. Nice work and tuning and all.

The new Tabblos templates are GREAT.

Thanks for the feedback. We were debating leaving the Halloween ones in or not and I was actually the one who argued to pull them out due to information overload. But you make a good point.

Any plans to add printed wall calendars? I love the quality of the Tabblo posters and books and would like to be able to create a calendar that would look as nice. What I imagine is a design that would be 13 tabblo pages (one as the cover), about 16x16 (or whatever makes sense), with standard calendar printed on the back-side of the prints. I buy at least 2 photo calendars (Sierra Club, etc) every year. It would be really cool to have one of my own or to make as gifts.

Tell me if I'm in the wrong place but how does one add tags with 2 words like for example - toy train? It keeps appearing as 'toy' and 'train'. I don't know how to make them together, as one tag. Somebody knows?

Oh I forgot to say my greetings! So, hello everybody. Greetings from a newbie!
Dunster said at 2:39 p.m. on Nov 16, 2006:
This is a fine place. Tabblo Issues and Tabblo Features are two others, depending on what the topic is.

We implemented tags in two different ways on the site, and we haven't gone back to make them consistent. It's one of those things we keep meaning to fix but haven't quite gotten to.

When you upload photos, the uploader gives you the option of tags that use spaces (separating tags with commas). All of the other places (like My Photos or the lightbox) use spaces as a way to separate tags - so only one word per tag.

I'm glad you asked about it. Feeback from members is one of the ways we decide our priorities. Clearly, this one matters for you!
Estara said at 2:59 a.m. on Nov 21, 2006:
Oh I see...that means it's better for me to create tags from Picasa since I use it to upload my photos to Tabblo. Well, I do hope I can do it with Tabblo's lightbox in the near future but thanks a lot!

Why doesn't the spell-checker know tabblo? created by JeffS on Nov 5, 2006:
JeffS said at 11:11 a.m. on Nov 5, 2006:
I often use the word tabblo in a message (as in this one) and the spell-checker underlines it as questionable. Hopefully tabblo will make it into the Meriam-Webster dictionary someday, but until then, could it be added to a "custom" dictionary?

It doesn't bother me, but I find it ironic that tabblo doesn't think tabblo is a word!
Antonio said at 11:39 a.m. on Nov 5, 2006:
It is actually not an official word but you guys can help us get it there :)

What is spell-checker? I was trying out Firefox 2.0's bullt-in spellcheck last night and realized that it doesn't pick up our textblocks (in the tabblos) as relevant fields to spellcheck. What else should we be supporting?

I'm using firefox 2.0 (most of the time) when on tabblo. Is firefox doing the checking? It underlines the misspelled words in my reply window as I type. It underlines firefox also, fwiw. :-)

i use a mac with Safari and with there is spell checking :)
i love using firefox for general browsing needs, but firefox spell check does not work like safari, (safari spell check works almost like MS word spell checking)

Tabblo isn't an official word? My drama instructor at the university used it multiple times... It was a 3 week assignment. I didn't know she was making it up as we went along! Wow, just goes to show... :)

I suppose Tabbloite is out then too?

~pmc

Minor nit on group's featured tabblo created by JeffS on Nov 2, 2006:
JeffS said at 1:23 p.m. on Nov 2, 2006:
I love the new groups feature. Great idea! The only small nit I have is that I would rather NOT see the comments from the "featured" tabblo. They are confusing on the groups page, since the mix in with the discussions section. I'd only want to see the comments if I viewed the tabblo.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the feedback. We're looking at ways to evolve the group feature in the next few days and weeks. I'm curious what other people think. Featured tabblo comments in group discussion, or no?
Bonnie_B said at 9:09 p.m. on Nov 2, 2006:
I concur with JeffS -- would rather see comments on individua tabblos within the context of those tabblos, and leave the group page(s) for group discussion...

I agree with Jeff. The mixture of topic, replies and comment are confusing.

Let another 100 million websites bloom! created by Antonio on Nov 1, 2006:
Antonio said at 8:47 p.m. on Nov 1, 2006:
CNN is reporting that Netcraft is claiming we're now at 100 million websites online. Wowee! This is an amazing thing given how much of a pain it is to get a website up and running. True enough, the era of the lightweight personal CMS has drastically lowered the barrier to creating websites (3 clicks in some cases), but we've got a long way to go still. After all, how many people do you know that both put up a website and then keep updating it?

Think of blogs for a moment: they solve the constant update problem by giving you a very rigid template to pour your content into: the reverse chronological diary. New services like Vox may spice this up with glitzy styles but underneath the paint job, it's still the same car. Which runs on the same gas— namely, the brief text entry with a title and a date.

To get to the next 100 million sites our bet at Tabblo is that the publishing was not only going to have to get easier but also support different kinds of content forms. The "tabblo" is our best guess at what one such form may look like— part photo gallery and part blog entry it tries to achieve three things: use the type of content most regular folks have and want to share (digital photos), do it with enough creative freedom to make the authoring experience rewarding (the Tabblo editor), and do it in a "web native" way (i.e., scrollable pages, permalinks, and RSS).

So that is a little bit on our reasons for making up this wacky new format and giving it a name. It has many offline cousins: the scrapbook and the collage are just two that we hear about a lot when our members describe Tabblo.

With respect helping to get to the next 100 million sites— how are we doing?

Time's Person of the Year 2006: You

From http://www.time.com/time/
"Yes, you. You control the Information Age. Welcome to your world."

I think they mean you, Tabblo and the rest of us Tabbloers.
Congrats!
