PROs and CONs Nikon D80 created by Pachito on Jun 30, 2008:

Pachito said at 11:32 a.m. on Jun 30, 2008:
I intend to buy a Nikon D80 in a month or two. I used to own a D70 before the digital photography age and actually know what you get when buying Nikon. I currently own a Lumix FZ-20 which is about 4 years old. It is a reliable camera but it's time for a change. I found many positive reviews on the Internet but I now invite the Tabblo community to share their opnions with me. Thank you in advance.

Proud New Nikon Owner :) created by Marcif on Dec 15, 2007:

Well you guys are a quiet, yet very talented, group! I have just become the proud owner of a Nikon D40x, an early Christmas present from my husband. I also use a D40 at work, have for about two months now. The D40 is a great entry-level dSLR. I tried Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, but just kept coming back to the Nikon. My dad is a long-time Nikon user, so maybe it runs in the family. Anyway, I am happy to be a part of this group.

Congrats on the new camera. I think you will find Nikon just an awesome choice.

Buying a D200 created by DeltaV on Mar 30, 2007:

DeltaV said at 1:28 a.m. on Mar 30, 2007:
I come from a family of photographers. We are also a loyal Nikon family. I used one for my Peru photos (passed down from Dad) that is actually older than me! Now I figure it's time to move to a D-SLR and have settled on the D200. Any comments on whether to wait? Is Nikon coming out with another prosumer camera anytime soon?
Cruising said at 8:56 a.m. on Mar 30, 2007:
I haven't heard of any at all. This topic is discussed all the time. Is there a D300 or D3H on the horizon? If they do announce one, it will be some time before it hits the stores. I think the D40x was pretty rare in being avaialble a month after announcement.

Shooting in cooler weather.... created by Cruising on Jan 8, 2007:

Cruising said at 9:06 a.m. on Jan 8, 2007:
Well I took my Nikon D200 and lenses out for the first time in cooler weather. The temp was around 40 or 45 (max), but with a 20 degree wind, the wind chill made it much cooler outside. The gear in my Slingshot 300 was fine ... even room temp when I got back to the truck after our day at the Zoo. But I was concerned with the 70-200 lens and the 17-55mm that was exposed. Also - as I went in and out of buildings, the change in temp and humidity could affect condensation. I always kept the hood on the lenses which reduced the wind from hitting directly on the lens. I read about this - and it appears to have helped. I didn't get any condensation or even fogging that I could see. The pictures are in my latest Tabblo called Hide and Seek (at the Zoo) with the animals. When I first post-processed (crop, levels, sharpening), I thought many pics looked washed out or out of focus. I assumed the focus problem was due to the colder weather possibly slowing down the auto-focus. I had about a 70% keep rate which was great - given all this was hand-held. The washed out (on color) turns out to mainly be the bright sun and I didn't use a polarizer. The pics in the shade turned out great. *** By the way - on your monitors - do the colors in these pics look off (like all red cast or all yellow cast)? Thanks - Bob (Cruising)

The best 30mm-ish lens for the D70? created by Antonio on Dec 17, 2006:

Antonio said at 2:10 p.m. on Dec 17, 2006:
Any thoughts? I've heard that this Sigma is quite good, but I'd be interested in what others think...?
Cruising said at 3:51 p.m. on Dec 17, 2006:
I was looking at this same range about 4 months ago. I ended up with a 28mm f2.8 from Nikon. I was disappointed and have since sold it. I love my 50 f1.4 so much, I was hoping to find a prime that was around the 30mm range. I finally settled on using a wide zoom (17-55mm f2.8). It was more expensive, but is my "default" lens that I keep on the camera 99% of the time. I know Sigma and others make similar lenses. Was there a specific need you were looking to fill (e.g. indoor vs outdoor vs all around)? Fast vs acceptable aperture?
Cruising said at 9:06 a.m. on Jan 8, 2007:
Antonio - did you ever get a lens? Which one?
Antonio said at 4:01 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
Sorry, just saw this question. I got the Sigma 30mm and I have really really enjoyed it. Apparently they had some quality issues that made it focus slowly but mine is just about as fast as my 1.4 50mm Nikkor.

The best compact zoom for a Nikon D mount created by Antonio on Nov 7, 2006:
|
Antonio said at 7:39 a.m. on Nov 7, 2006:
Hey all, I am looking for a slightly better zoom than the one that comes in the D70 kit. Specifically, I'd like a faster zoom so that I can use it indoors without a flash. I've currently got a 50MM 1.4 that I use for that very purpose but I've seen a Sigma (on a Canon mount) which seems to have both of the qualities that I am looking for. Any thoughts?
Cruising said at 8:37 a.m. on Nov 7, 2006:
What type of range are you looking for? There is a 17-55mm f2.8 lens that is an awesome lens. I believe there is a similar 17-35mm f2.8 too.
